An Estes Meteor. Since I work for NASA as a meteor "expert", I thought it was high time I built this one. Had a bit of trouble with the old decals, even with a couple of coats of decal film. Still, it turned out decent.

2004! You can tell it's old because the Excelsior logo is New York instead of Michigan. :p

Nice work. I especially like your Long Tom clone. I happen to be in the middle of my Estes Long Tom "Classic Series" kit build. In fact as I write this, I'm waiting for the glue to dry on the sustainer fin fillets. I'm anticipating a bit of a challenge when it comes to painting it. Like you did, I want to do it up in the factory paint scheme, and it looks like some masking will be involved here, especially on the booster. I don't have much experience masking around fin fillets; any advice on technique? I'm concerned about "bleed through" and I was going to rattle can it.

Just use the blue 3M masking tape and burnish the edges with a fingernail before you start.

I tried many things over the years for masking - 3M painter's tape, scotch tape, and so forth. Still had lots of bleeds, due to not burnishing down all the edges and my poor eyesight. A few years back I started using the Tamiya masking tape I found at the LHS. It's expensive, but very forgiving - I haven't had a problem since.

The one technique I used before that worked ok was scotch tape followed by a coat of the same color to seal the edges. Then apply the fin color.

Also, remove the mask as soon as the paint has set, else you run the risk of it "chipping".

Good luck with the Long Tom!

Thanks for this tip, Vanel. In the past when I had a rocket with the BT and fins having different colors, I would usually spraypaint the BT and then handpaint the fins, but with a high contrast white and black scheme, masking and spraypaint will have a more uniform look with hopefully straighter edges; plus I want to develop some skill here.

Centuri had some very interesting and innovative designs and also great looking rockets. I have no less than four rockets that are retro repros of centuri rockets.

A very nice lot of rockets! I'm particularly partial to the Long Tom clone. One of my favorite models and you did a catalog worthy build. They're pretty darn good flyers as well. I've done the minimum recommended loads and it gets up there pretty good. I'm looking forward to an absolutely still day.

Which blue tape?

I have had mixed results with the regular kind and have not tried the orange-cored "delicate surfaces" kind; some swear it is similar to the specialized Tamiya tape, which is what I use.

The orange-cored. My paint jobs tend to be fairly simple, but I've had good results with it.

Did the tape have that special gel coating on the edges to keep paint from seeping underneath?

No coating. In fact this tape is thinner than regular masking tape. I think what made this masking job successful was Bill's advice to burnish the tape edges thoroughly, which is what i did. There was no bleed through at all and the paint edges came out very straight and sharp. I did do a little paint touch up afterwards around the top end of the fins to square them up a bit.
I bought the 3M tape roll at Fred Meyer for $7.

When I was young (over 40 years ago  ), there were 3 rockets that were part of every rocket launch - an Estes Constellation, the upper stage of an Estes Apogee II, and a Centuri MX-774. Despite numerous chute failures, these battered birds hung in there until, one by one, they were gradually lost to unknown reaches due to an over-eager kid using C6's in his quest for altitude.

I had already cloned a Constellation and an Apogee II, and now, finally, I have cloned a MX-774 to round out the new Tenacious Trio. :)

Parts by Semroc. My old MX-774 was all white, but I painted this one to match the original missile (still need to add the red fin tips).

Dittos on the Tamiya. And as long as you aren't using it to also mask the bedroom you are conned by your significant other into painting (because you cannot find the blue tape) it will last quite awhile. :-)

I have had no bleed-thrus or any issues since I started using it. To save tape I will put regular masking tape onto the paper I use to cover large areas, but always anchored onto the Tamiya.

I will press the Tamiya firmly, but have never burnished it with a tool, which seems to be required if using any other type of masking tape.

That tung wood reference was probably me on my blog.
I've noticed a big difference in the wood density in the Estes kits.
The Estes "balsa" reminded me of the wood in the Chinese Sky rocket kits. After I built their Condor pop-pod glider I noticed some similarities.
Nobody else has even questioned the wood until your post.

It makes sense, the Estes kits are assembled in China, why not use a native wood that is close to balsa.
Tung wood (the same wood they get tung oil from) is harder and not as pink as some of the softer balsa.

I'm a sport flyer and not so concerned with altitude so a little heavier fin wood doesn't concern me. If it is tung wood, it doesn't nick as easily and finishes up pretty well. It's just harder to sand.

I've got to try some of the Monokote. There is a new hobby shop in town (the Hobby Town went belly-up about a year ago) and they're well stocked with that stuff. That and I have a place to buy motors again.

Shrox Bolaero, made out of miscellaneous odds and ends. Decals printed on a color laser - still have to work on the grey alien faces on the tail. The grey color on the decal was overwhelmed by the black paint; probably going to print those out on white decal paper.

Another beauty. Just perused your fleet page again, and it seems you've added a few since my last visit. Lots of fun to look at. At this point, I've cloned a few that you have as well, though not to your quality of finish. My complaint is that you have a nice looking BSG Viper but not the required BSG "Laser" Torpedo. FYI: you can get it pretty cheaply on-line now. Just sayin'.

Estes' ARF midpower Majestic. The box did not lie - very easy build in less than an hour and doesn't look too shabby (To quote Mal, "Shiny"). I am not a fan of peel and cuss decals, but I do like the other parts of this rocket, especially the motor retention.

Nice Thunderhawk build. I always tell the story of when my daughter Antares was about 8 and I helped her build a Centuri Thunderhawk circa 1982. I was stationed in Michigan at the time (horrible for a nice Ohio boy like me) and we flew her model on an A. Thermaled it away. She would bring it up everytime I mentioned flying rockets. Back in 2011 as she and her husband were preparing to move from Texas to Virginia, they attended a DARS launch. I presented her with a cloned Thunderhawk which she prepped and flew on an A. I had built a SEMROC Thunderchief for Jay, but gave him a B so he would have to chase it a bit. Got to keep the son-in-law in-line. When I visited them last summer to see my granddaughter, both models were on top of a bookcase.
I do have an Estes Thunderhawk kit and the SEMROC parts to build another Thunderhawk. Started with Centuri and always favored them.
Again, nice to see an outstanding model of an old design.

I have a new tape the I will be trying. It is a 3M vinyl Tape for automotive painting. 1/4 in x 36 yards. PN06405. The tape has some flexibility on curves. It also lays flat, if installed with the right technique, it will not cause bleedout. One of my nieces' husband is a body man and suggested i try it. My first attempt with it will be on my Estes Conquest build that is waiting on the second coat of gloss white, Testor's #1245 and the top half of the Conquest will be Model Master Gloss French Blue #2715. The French Blue color was verified by one of the Estes Designers I talked to. I was curious as to the indicted color , so I called Estes customer service as to the blue on the color sheet in the Conquest Kit package.

David,

I'll be interested in how that vinyl tape works out. The best I've found so far is Tamiya. Comes in narrow widths. I bought some a few years ago at hobby store. It is yellow in color, but has similar look/feel to standard tan-colored masking tape.

dvmanning
06-26-2015, 06:36 AM
Lee, I purchased the tape at our local O'Reilly's Automotive store, the tape is blue in color.
Here are four characteristics that the tape is known for:

Sharp paint lines

Superior Conformability

Clean Removal

Waterborn Compatable

The key disadvantage is the price, it is around $15.00 per roll for the 1/4". The store gives a discount to all veterans, so mine cost about $13.00. Besides the part # , there is wordage on the package that is: Vinyl Tape 471+

LeeR

David,

Thanks for the info on the tape, and also, thanks for your service!

If the tape works well, the price is worth not having the aggravation of sloppy paint lines.

My experience has lead me back to Tamiya tapes over and over. The body shop tape has a place in my shop, but I reach for the Tamiya most of the time. The body shop tape may be flexible, but it often fails to keep that curve sealed you need, especially if you try to leave it in place. It tends to let go, whereas the Tamiya does not, particularly over more complex stretches. For straight and straitish lines, it works fairly well, tho.
You'll see...

Allen, thanks for the heads up. In this particular case, the color separation line is a 26 inch straight line - tail end to tip of nosecone, on both sides of the tube. Since I have never used this tape before, I will get my niece's husband to show me how to use the tape correctly the first time, since he uses the tape on a daily basis.

06-27-2015, 09:23 PM
The body shop tape, as I call it, is all I used to use. Then I discovered the Tamiya style. I have all but retired the vinyl tape, now. It's OK, but the T.tape is more flexible, comes in different widths, and is a good bit cheaper. The dispenser is even refillable. For your purpose you described, I think either will work just fine. Use your fingernail and press to make sure the edge of the vinyl tape adhears well and seals out the paint. I bet you knew that already, tho!
Be sure to report back!

Great looking Astron Scrambler.
One of my all-time favorite Estes kits.
I have an original Estes Astron Scrambler and a Semroc Scrambler NIB in my collection.
I also have a built original and a built clone.

What paint did you use for the NC and fin? I used cheap 99 cent Walmart acrylic craft paint (Pueblo color) and kept adding coats with an airbrush until I got the shade that matched my catalog photo.

IIRC, I looked at that color, or at least one of the oranges. My catalog looked slightly darker and and a bit more brown than some pics I've seen on the net so I wanted to try to match it directly. In hindsight, yours looks better.

I used Aero Gloss Stearman Red Dope on my Semroc Clone and used Testors Bright Red Enamel on my original.
I think the Stearman Red looks better on my two Scramblers, but the Testors Bright Red is closer to the correct catalog color.

Nice stuff there Bill!

Had a look at your 'collection' and all I can say is Wow! Next time my wife bugs me about "You sure you need 'another' rocket" I will point her toward your blog! :chuckle:

I am fortunate in that I do not have a wife to inhibit my hobbies. Of course, you married dudes are going to outlive me by a considerable bit - I suppose there are trade offs in everything :D

Thank you for the kind words about the fleet. I have been into rockets for over 47 years and don't intend to slow down now :chuckle:

Bill,

I have a loving, supportive wife. They can be found. She allows me to spend freely on guns, rockets, you name it. But neither of my "fleets" can hold a candle to her "fleet" of shoes and purses. I suspect I spend more, however ... :)

You marital status would definitely win when it comes to responding to doing chores, and probably a whole long list of other freedoms I've forgotten about.

I doubt it. Even if you have a closet full of black guns and custom 1911's, her room full of designer purses and shoes will add up fast. It's amazing how a plain old paisley cloth purse made from $3-4 of material shoots up in price when the name "Vera Bradley" is on it. I could understand it if it said "Vern Estes". :D

I'm afraid of asking her what she spends... Actually, she may spend more on the grandkids than stuff for herself. Funny how she mostly said no to our kids when hounded to buy stuff, yet has little will power for the grandkid's pleas. :)

My point exactly on those purses! My wife has one of those hideous purses that cost as much as my Glock. But it's her money, so I can't argue. She didn't whimper when I bought an AR-15 in case of zombies. Indeed, spouses like that can be found.

Not that we have that kind of disposable income very often. We have 6 grandchildren...

It sounds like flowers and a date night are owed her, unless you've already taken care of it ... however, it certainly never hurts to keep ahead of the game on nice gestures.

We tend to go out a lot, so instead of movies or dinner date, I dumped Dish (lots of issues with trees and snow/ice), I just maxed out an Infinity X1 install, with all channels (whole house DVR access, of course), and to add icing to the cake I programmed her Lifetime, Hallmark, and other movie channels into the "Favorites" folder in the Channel Guide. That should keep me in her good graces for awhile ...

Not until said bikes are safely tucked away in my shop. She might suspect subterfuge and change her mind! :p

I just made the remark about the better half in passing she really allows me to indulge in all kinds of frivolous stuff from telescopes, to planes, to rockets! :D

Bill,

Very nice. Love the nose cone profile with the retro (?) cockpit shape. The decals are really nice looking -- they complement the rocket style. If I didn't have north of 150 unbuilt kits, I might bite.

I just received the new Estes Honest Johns today. Really anxious to get started on one, so only one went into storage. :o

I hate clutter more and more as I get older. So I have spent some time getting my rockets off the floor. Here is most of my current fleet - have about 3 shelves of rockets left to go.

Nice and neat. I've got 'em strewn everywhere. Hanging off the angled ceiling, on shelves, on desks, under tables, in the attic. It never ends.

That’s quite the fleet there, Bill! Looks like they ‘shelve up’ pretty well. Do you like the yellow Estes stands? I had thought about getting some packs of those for a while now and just never have done it. But, I DO need to do some of what you have done myself. Mine are just getting stacked here and there in one room.

I do like the Estes stands - they provide stable support. Bought a bunch of them from AC Supply when I placed my last order.

With the new Estes screw type retainers, you need to use a stand 1 size smaller (13 mm for 18 mm tubes), insert a spent motor casing backwards into the rocket, screw on the retainer, and slide the stand up into it. That way you can keep the retainer with the rocket (Easy for me to loose).

I've got thousands (many from school launches) of spent motor casings and plenty of scrap wood. I just cut little squares, cut a slot in the casing for the motor hook, and glue them to the square. Kits like the Orbital Transport or Interceptor deserved and got Semroc stands (Centuri clones). The ones that are stable without a stand, usually sit that way, and of course, I've got a bunch hanging from the ceiling.

That is a GREAT tip. Thanks. I love the screw-on retainers (I even put together an Alpha VI using one and my next Nova Payloader will have one as well) but I also like the little mini-porta-pad stands.

I have rockets under beds, in closets on tops of shelves, a few I don't care much about subject to the Louisiana humidity out in the garage on a top shelf. I really wish I had room to make a display like that.

I also like the tip on the screw on retainers. I'll need to try that.
