March 1st, 2014 launch @MMMSC

This is our sister club in Maine that has a lot of CMASS members attend.
Today was the first launch of MMMSC season.
It didn't start too well. The pic's will tell the story.

And still more...

I couldn't catch a ignition or liftoff from the pad.

And more still...

The guy(and that's his name) who got stuck also lost a rocket in the woods.

He was pulled out by a good samaritan and was handed a small hand ax to cut down the tree.

All in all a good day to launch!

No, cold. We launched from 11:30 to 2:00 pm. I left at 1:00pm because my feet got too cold. BTW, there was at least a foot to two feet of snow below a two inch ice crust over the snow.

The hatchet could have used a bit more propellent. Would have "cut down" on the re-entry delay!

Guy.

Is that a two-wheel, rear drive truck? A trick is to fill the bed with snow to add much needed weight on the rear axle. It automagically disappears when it is no longer needed.

A bad day launching rockets beats a good day shoveling the driveway...

Four wheel drive. Weight would not have helped. The snow under the crust was like dry powder. Where it was stuck, both the front and rear pumpkin as well as some cross members on the frame were hung up on the crusted snow. If we had been able to clear all that, it would have been possible to back out. Luckily, the other truck backed in over the tracks in the shallower snow and we hooked a chain between the two trailer hitches. Once we cleared the hangup, it backed out with little problem.

From a southland perspective, I gotta give you an A for effort....on those kind of days down here we stay inside and build.
