Build Thread: scratch 1:13 scale Black Brant III

1 Attachment(s)
Now that I've finally replicated the faux nozzle I can now scratch build the BB III in BT55 based, c. 1:13 scale.

First, the pick:

(1) BT55 x 12"
(1) BT55 x 6.7"
(both will be joined to create the main BT)
(1) BT55 X 1.26" (payload section)
(1) PNC 55
(2) JT-55 COUPLERS
(1) FAUX NOZZLE ASSEMBLY
(1) FIN PATTERN
(1) SHEET OF 3/32" BASSWOOD
(1) BT 20 X 6" 9 (for engine mount)
(2) CR 55/20
(1) THRUST RING
(1) 100# BRAIDED KEVLAR X 24"
(1) SHOCK CORD 1/4" X 48"
(1) DECAL SET (no replacement!)

I've enlarged and cut out my 1: scale BBIII fin pattern and cut (3) blanks from my finest sheet of 3/32" basswood. I then hand scrape the bevels into the leading edges.

As for the 18MM engine mount, I'm not going to "pollute" this scale build with an engine hook. It will be "old school" friction fit. I've glued the thrust ring 2.25" from the rear. As always, I've attached a length of 100 lb. braided Kevlar cord to the upper CR for a shock cord mount.

I like the idea of ditching the hook on scale builds. I’ve often thought it would be nice to develop a mount that locks the motor in from the top — basically a twist lock. Kind of like the twist lock mounts on the Semroc Brighton (their big Ranger / Super Big Bertha). That kit comes with multiple mounts that are inserted into a “holder” tube, and twist to lock them in place.

I have that kit, and I’ve never seen so many parts in one box!

The 1:13 scale BBIII now has it's engine mount inserted, it's fins mounted, it's PNC55 and payload tube assembled and a Kevlar tether attached to same, and the fins are treated with (4) coats of sanding sealer and sanded.

It's ready for primer.

Looking good. Going with the red/white pattern? Not to throw shade but, I'm looking at a vintage photo and it looks like the BB III has a boat tail rather than a nozzle?

EDIT: Apologies, I checked Peter Alway's book, it's definitely a nozzle. As Gilda Radner used to say, Never mind!

I'm using ROTW for the reference. Your photo DOES kinda-sorta make it look like a boattail though. Maybe it's just camera angle.

Yes, I'm doing the red and white Canadian pattern.

I've finally been able to paint!

The BBIII's main airframe is coated with (2) coats of apple red. The faux nozzle in metallic silver. The PNC and payload assembly is being repainted because I had a paint malfunction that produced a finish that was unacceptable.

Still a long way to go--white fins, touch ups, and placement of the decals that I have NO REPLACEMENTS for. No pressure! :o

I'm on the fence about doing scale faux antennas.

I seriously need to stop screwing up! I don't know where I ever got the idea the nozzle was supposed to be silver. It was black on the old Estes version and it’s red in ROTW.

Fortunately an easy fix for you. As far as the decals, have you considered scanning the originals as back up if something goes awry? Don't know how you feel about home printed or vinyl decals, but they are possible replacements, if you need them. Just had Mark at Stickershock23 draw up some custom decals for a Centuri Hustler clone I'm building. Good price, fast turnaround.
Looking forward to your finished build. I just completed building a BBII clone (2"). Still nekkid. Probably where I got the idea about a tail cone. Cheers.

I've scanned them already.. As for Stickershock23 replicating them, I haven't asked yet, but IIRC Mark cannot do the ultra-fine printing within the blue circle in vinyl.

I’ll ask anyway.
