Can't Miss Restaurants

Rather than hijacking the space food thread...........................

For almost half of my civilian life I've traveled all over the US and the rest of the world. I've been to all 50 states and nearly all Canadian provinces and (of course) eaten and drank in all of them.

Good food and plenty of it is an absolute must for world travelers, so here's a few "Can't Miss" restaurants in the US.

These choices are of course subjective and are a matter of personal preference.

Belle View East Cafe, Falconer, NY. (get the Fish and Chips and/or the Beef on Weck)

Dinosaur BBQ, Syracuse, NY. (the line to get in is worth it.)

Charlie's Fish house, Crystal River, FL (save room for the Key Lime pie)

Frankie's Deli, Lombard, IL (best cannolis on the planet)

Sanitary Fish Market, Morehead City, NC (awesome fresh caught Atlantic seafood)

St. Elmo's Steak House, Indianapolis, IN (be sure to start with the shrimp cocktail)

Gracie's, New Lothrop, MI (steaks are big enough to block a colon)

These are just a scant few of my required stops. There's many--possibly hundreds-- more.

You remind me of one of my History professors in college. Every single country, state, province, territory etc. that was brought up, he had been there. He'd say, "If you ever go to (insert location here), go to (insert name of bar/tavern/restaraunt here) and try their (insert mixed drink here). It's the best ever made." He traveled extensively, drank excessively, and definitely didn't pigeonhole himself when it came to mixed drinks.

Jeffy- Gracie's in New Lothrop, Mi. is no longer the destination it used to be and has REALLY went downhill in the past 20yrs or so. Quality/Service/portions have all ben reduced to the point that I don't even recommend it any more.
Best Steak/Seafood/Pasta in Michigan BY FAR is Lelli's Chophouse in Auburn Hills.
It is however expensive. Many of you on this board would probably choke at the prices, but it is top-notch, even above the best casino steakhouses, and I have ate at a lot of those.
Expect a $300 dinner for two including drinks. Top quality costs top $$.

Gaucho's Brazilian Steakhouse in Livonia is also A+++. About $50/person +Drinks.

Traverse City Michigan has several top-notch restaurants....if there once in a lifetime you MUST dine at Boone's Long Lake Inn for dinner. They have Steaks large enough to satisfy Fred Flintstone on his hungriest day. Other top notch eateries in Traverse City include Treviano's Italian, Minerva's in the Park Place Hotel, Red Ginger Asian/fusion, and Poppycocks Café.

Best BBQ in the world is Woody's in Winter Haven, Florida
Close to best BBQ is the Union Woodshop in Clarkston, Mi. That restaurant is endorsed by Guy Fieri and Kid Rock.

Best Thai I have had outside of Thailand is in Warren Mi. at Thai Star, SW corner of Ryan and 12mi. rd.

Sorry to hear about Gracie's.

It's probably been more than 20 years since I've been there. Gracie herself used to come to our table and ask how our dinners were. She was pretty old even then, so I'm sure she's long gone now. If she did pass on perhaps the quality and portion sizes died with her.
I guess the only thing that's constant is change.

I think that might be near The Prop Shop hobby store.

ghrocketman 09-16-2016 01:17 PM

It's not TOO far from The Prop Shop. The Prop Shop is on Van Dyke, South of 696, I think between 9 and 8 Mile roads.
The Prop Shop is my hands-down favorite olde-tyme hobby shop.
Nankin in Farmington Hills is 2nd place. Nankin is far newer, but they carry a LOT more product.

Lambert's Cafe, Sikeston Mo. The Chicken and Dumplings are hard to beat, the "throwed rolls" are great - I only eat one with butter & honey before the meal is delivered :-) Luke can tell us more about the other goodies if/when he posts.

La Michiocana Meat Market, Nacogdoches, Tx. Great little tacos. The maize tortillas are doubled, the fajita meat is good as is the red sauce. The best part is their pico de gallo. I could eat it with a spoon all by itself!

There is a place in Starkville, Ms. known as Robert's. It has the best fried panfish, 15 bean soup over wild rice, and homemade spaghetti sauce ;-)

I'm sure there are others that will come to mind.

Bob
p.s. nearly all fast food/chains make me ill...Jack in the Box is the worst. It literally has doubled me over afterwards. It must be the stuff they cook with.

Home cooking is best!

Thanks, Gordy.
I could not remember if it was 9&10 or 8&9.
I just drive down Van Dyke from the GM Tech Center until I get there...I was there 2 weeks ago.
