Looking for 6" #1 phillips bit
I'm looking for a 6" long #1 Phillips bit for my cordless screwdriver. I'd even settle for a 3" narrow shaft if I have to.
The problem is all the ones I've found are the standard quarter inch hex shaft for the whole length, with a #1 bit at the tip. Something like this: http://images.orgill.com/200x200/3144409.jpg I need something where only the last 1" or so that goes into the cordless tool has the hex shaft, and the rest of the bit is the same skinny diameter as a standard Phillips screwdriver: http://www.trainweb.org/girr/tips/t...llips_small.jpg Too many times now I've tried to take something apart that had deeply recessed screws, and the hex shaft just won't fit through the hole in the plastic shell. A conventional screwdriver fits fine. I've managed to find some skinny shaft TORX bits, but not a #1 Phillips. I've looked at every big box hardware store and local hardware store around, and not found anything. Any suggestions? Short of having some one machine down the hex shaft for me??? |
What if it didn't have a hex at all? I've sacrificed many a Craftsman screwdriver for drill/drivers.

I've hacked a couple back when I was using a wimpy cordless drill, but now that I've got a real driver, all it has is the hex shaft with the quick release snap.
I've also made bits out of raw hex stock, and mounted funky tools into the hex stock. Best example was making a wire wrap tool that would wire wrap scrap TELCO phone wire around flash bulb leads. It worked great in the Black & Decker Versa screwdriver. As I said, I COULD machine down a hex shaft, but that would be a LOT more work than buying one if I could just find a source... |

If you can sacrifice the handle and either weld or epoxy the screwdriver shaft into a 1/4" hex driver with a quick release shaft.

Perhaps I am missing something. You want a small diameter phillips that you can use in a driver. If you take a relatively inexpensive screwdriver, hack off the handle, take a QuickConnect 1/4" or 3/16th nut driver and epoxy the screwdriver shaft into the cup (or weld it if you can) you end up with a #1 Phillips with a 1/4" QuickConnect hex shaft.
