Metal-look on rockets
I'm finishing up my DynaStar LexxJet and I want to make the engines have bright shiny front and rear like a real Gulfstream.
NASA Gulfstream Where can I find something I can use to simulate this look? I was thinking of using silver spray paint, but it just doesn't look the same. Thanks. - Feyd |
Chrome shiny is hard to create with paint. Adhesive chrome mylar might work if the surface isn't curved (other than a straight taper).
I once got a really interesting metallic finish, kind of a pewter look, by using Future floor polish over silver paint buffed with steel wool. |
Testor's Model Masters acrylics in bottle tend to work fairly well without getting into the extremely expensive and higher skill arenas. They work especially well if using an airbrush, including the cheapo unit Testor's makes for about $25 if you use a 40% off coupon.

I have what you need but....
Feyd,
I have just what you need but I just moved and I don't know where it is. It's packed away in a box somewhere. If your in no hurry, give me until the weekend to locate it. Daniel |

As for paint try Alclad paints http://www.scalehobbyist.com/manufa...s=3&t=1&man=alc , or Bare Metal Foil if you'd rather an adhesive backed material. http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=BF105

I agree with Troy here on the best way of replacating a NMF, also works on the bare-metal fighters from the late 40s to mid 60s. |
Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I was looking for something like Monokote I think. I'm not that good at masking (yet), so I want something that will look like metal with nice straight lines. The good thing about the LexxJet is the engine pods are standard body tubes so I don't have to worry about curvature.
Some kind of metal foil (but not as thin as silver leaf) would work great. Still working on painting the blue and white NASA color scheme so I'm not in that much of a hurry. Thanks. |
Have you looked at Bare-Metal Foil? It has a self-stick backing and you can cut it to any size or shape. It should be available at any good LHS or you can find it online.

For decorating something cylindrical, try looking at Michaels or Hobby Lobby (outside of the model section) for stick-on material. Don't bother trying to paint it. Bill |
