In most instances that I have come across, it is far better to be familiar with the drawing program and the printer you are using than to select a specific dpi.

I have seen certain settings in drawing programs lead to issues in print outs numerous times. For example, a technician setting thicker line weights to try and make lettering appear more bold, with the results that vertical lines of the lettering appear thicker than the curved lines.

Another consideration is the medium you are printing on. For the Mylar transparencies I use for screen printing, printing at too high of a dpi level will lead to smudging in an inkjet printer, but might be okay in a laser jet.
