Estes rubber shock-cords have ALWAYS SUCKED.
For decades I have replaced them with sewing-elastic as well.
For the past 20 odd years I have used a Kevlar leader on the engine mount that I tie the shock-cord to about 3" above the top of body tube.
I zipper-proof the Kevlar for about 1/2" above and below the top of the body tube.
Yes, it is a non-stock method even on the 'vintage' kits I build, but it makes them BETTER and more durable. It should be the STOCK method of ALL LPR and MPR recovery harnesses.
