Never thought about the possibility of those being Shuttle or Titan fins. Makes sense. Since most of them are in decent shape I've just been regluing fins and calling them good. The Pathfinder went back together pretty well and two of the scratch builds are also back together and ready to go. I was thinking that I might sneak up to B6-4 Field for an eBay refugee launch if the weather holds out for me this weekend. Last week would have been perfect, but I had too many irons in the fire. I haven't opened the AstroCam yet, but it doesn't appear to have film. That would be interesting.

Comrades:
Time for a new Rescue project: An old MPC Nike-Smoke. I had originally planned to dump this one because of the problems presented. But after further review and in light of the stuff we found about the "other" Nike-Smoke color scheme which would suit this return-to-flight perfectly, I decided to give it a try. Check out the "before" pictures. So what are the issues? 1) chipped plastic fin; 2) launch lug lines up with the fin (who does this?); 3) Nose cone tip broken off; 4) water damage to the nozzle end; It has been launched, probably a couple of times. How? They must have slid the bent rod against the fin and there must have been tremendous rod drag going up. But the chute is slightly tinged and the tube has a sulfury smell so . . . . First order of business is getting that lug off. I'll post pictures.

I don't disagree with your assessment GH.
But we're going to make it better than it was before. Better. Faster. Stronger. Seriously, I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this one. I've been working about an hour, and I was able to carefully remove the lug with relatively minimal damage. I squared off the missing area on the fin and if I could find my caliper, I'd match a similarly-sized piece of plastic to the widest point of the hole. I also poked at the shockcord mount with a small screwdriver long enough to pick the tri-fold out with my fingernail. Finally, I was able to wet sand the joints on the nose cone and it looks a lot better. So tomorrow, I'm going to glue in a small section of leftover straw from a can of pfft (you know, the stuff you blow dirt off your keyboard with . . . ). When that dries, I'll bondo around it and it'll look more scale than ever. All though I'm not a fan of the plastic launch lug, it's part of this kit's look so I'll glue it on in a better location. Oh, and I need to put new paper reenforcements on the parachute. They flaked off in my hand. Then I'll figure out what is going on at the back end of this thing. Neither JimZ nor YORS has a plan or instruction for this kit. If anyone has a copy, please post it. I'd love to see what it is that I'm looking at or at least what this mess started out as.

Make the first flight a big sendoff on an Aerotech D10-7 20 n-sec 18mm D.
If it survives that, it is meant to stay in the fleet.
