Early Estes starter sets certainly did have kits with hang tags in them. Pretty sure that continued until about 1970 when Estes was sold to Damon. Starter kits from the mid sixties had kits in side-gusset bags which pre-dated hang tag kits.

The "Model Rocketry" book in Neal's pictures was a collection of plans (some requiring long out of date parts) and technical reports. Also known at the Design Book. It would be interesting to see it scanned in.

Something else I'd like to see again is the little book of launch pad / launch panel construction that came with my econo starter set. I honestly don't remember much about it, other than it had some confusing electrical schematics (I was eight when I got it) and illustrations of home-made pads.

Is that the one that showed how to cut a soup can to make a curved deflector?

@Mojo: It has been 45 years at least, and I really don't recall the details, but that is almost certainly it.

I received one of these starter sets for Christmas back in 1973. As I recall, the Alpha kit did not come with a face card, just the kit in a bag.
