Paints and primers
Which brands and types do you like, or not like, to use on your rockets? And why? Thanks

For me, I like to airbrush my rockets (especially LPR) using acrylic paint such as Vallejo, Tamiya, Model Master Acryl. Acrylics don't stink!, they are easy to clean-up afterwards and you can even spray indoors. (Comes in handy on rainy or snowy days.)

I use rustoleum spray on everything. I can get it to look almost as nice as an automotive finish.
On my K-6 Ranger, just for fun, I went overboard by applying six coats, wet sanding between each. It's so smooth and glossy it's been mistaken for injection molded plastic. The only trouble I've had is that the spray nozzles can be temperamental. I usually soak them in thinner after each use. |

I like using lacquers, but that limits me to red, black and white by Valspar and Rustoleum. I used to occasionally use Testor's lacquer but that's become too expensive. I have to watch the humidity with any lacquer, but it dries fast and lets me move on to the next step much quicker. When painting other colors, I use whatever I can find, whether its my stash of old formula Krylon, or various enamel brands, mostly Valspar and Rustoleum.
I only use lacquer primers. I normally use Plasti-kote or Duplicolor, whichever is available at the time. Duplicoler is higher in solids, so it fills better, but it dries slower. One day when Kalifornia and the EPA make them out of reach, I'll probably start buying automotive lacquer primer and airbrush it. I do airbrush on occasion when I can't find a matching rattle can, or only need a tiny amount of an odd color. I normally use cheap Walmart 99 cent acrylics and custom mix them if I need something odd. I always filter the cheap paints because what I've used has had some lumps or impurities of some sort. YMMV.

I've had good luck so far with Rustoleum 2x and Stop Rust paints. I've generally been using (and happy with) Rusto Filler/Primer, but I've also used the Duplicolor and of course that's good too.

I paint mostly using an airbrush shooting vintage Aero Gloss dope and Brodak dope.
Not an easy method due to requiring many coats, but a method that results in a great finish only rivaled by automotive urethane systems.

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY. ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, TURMOIL, FIASCOS, and HAVOC ! Last edited by ghrocketman : 11-05-2018 at 11:13 AM. |

Smells a lot better than enamel or urethane.
