Default R/C Phoenix 7

Finally picked up a new Hangar 9 Phoenix 7 ARF.
For those interested it is an "Old School Ballistic Pattern" R/C .61 size Aircraft with retracts and tuned pipe.
Should be a blast to fly.
I'm going to use either a NIB OS 61 FSR or OS 61 VF for power with a Mac's header/tuned pipe depending on if I want to go side-exhaust or rear-exhaust.
For Electronics I'm going to use my vintage Futaba J-Series 8JN transmitter with a modern FM reciever and servos.

Guess I'm going to have to re-join my local R/C club and the AMA.

When I saw the title, I thought you had found an Aerotech Phoenix!

I only have one 60 size plane, but I never finished it. I started out with .40 size fun fly planes, (Sig Fazer was my "trainer") and never flew anything larger of my own.

I eventually picked a Kadet Senior trainer to modify for video camera payloads. It was a true "box of sticks" kit. In stock form, it could fly on a .40, but I built it for a .61 BB OS or Thundertiger to haul payloads. I converted it to tail dragger, added flaps, split the elevators and made the rudder full length, added removable floor and side panels for the camera lens, and rigged up brackets to hold a fairly large VHSC recorder pointing either down or to the side. It's been sitting like that, ready to cover for a long, long time. We've progressed from fairly large VHSC, to VHSC palm size, to Digital palm size, to HD keychain cams that can be flown on parkfly R/C planes since then!

I haven't flown in several years. The club I belonged to was a long way from home and nobody was ever there. Only a couple of members could be counted on to mow when it was their turn. I often had to mow before I could fly. Just like with camera technology changing, batteries and electric motors have become the new norm for R/C. It would be like starting over because I don't know anything about the electric side of R/C flying. If a club were to get started locally, I might start flying again, but for now, I'm mostly in a motorcycle phase.

Good luck with your club and flying ventures!

I pass by my former R/C club every day on the way to and from work.
Got the R/C bug back from a micro 4ch R/C P-51 and Corsair my GF bought for me that I fly in her back-field.
Going to have to get out all the old Pattern and Pylon gear that has been mothballed for at least 8 years.

I last flew ~ 1999

It's a Goldberg Eaglet 50 built in '91 named The Piglet due to the %$#^@! lite-ply fuselage. No excuse
for lite-ply. Back in the early '80s I flew various gliders, an .020 powered Nomad w/ pulse r/o,
and electrics. As an aside, my "instructor" was abrasive at best. So, I used a Dave Brown
simulator and taught myself to fly gassers. Take off, pattern, land...

Bob
p.s. It has a K&B 20 Sportster with a 10/4 prop. Great climb!

I learned to fly on a Sig Kadet/OS 40 FSR/Futaba 6FGK radio way back in the late 70's.
I had a great instructor at the Holly, Mi club back then.
Was actually BORED with a trainer like that after 5 flights and was flying much higher performing aircraft within a month.

It IS the 'free for all' section, and the topic is NOT political so.....

I'm old time R/C guy myself, hence the Jet-Rocket models. I got bored with R/C and the clubs and I find myself coming back to rockets again and again. I, too learned on a Kadet MK II. Lost it in the woods later in the summer and never found it. Over $300 in the woods. Dang.

I think I sold my built Kadet one year after learning on it.
I was much happier moving up to a Craft-Air Scout 15 and then a Sig Kobra that was WAY overpowered with a tuned-pipe equipped OS 40 FSR.
