I used and always do use 30 minute epoxy. I rarely use 5 minute for anything anymore.

I'm just finishing up my V2.
I used 12 minute epoxy from Uncle Mikes Rocket Shack. I used it on everything, even the wood to paper joints, centering rings/engine tube. I really liked the way it sanded when I smoothed out the fillets. I would suggest papering the fins prior to instalation with TiteBond though. Uncle Mikes Rocket Shack also sells 5 minute and 30 minute epoxies. Very reasonable price, I have all 3 setting ranges. After I puttied the nose cone and coated and sanded it with TiteBond, I used the 30 minute to coat it. That also sanded really nice with 220 for the primer coat. Gave the nose cone a shell like plastic so it doesn't ding so easy. For the part that fits in the body tube, I just coated and sanded smooth with TiteBond to protect the balsa from ware going in and out many times. Good Luck, and Happy Building! |

I have been papering all my fins on my larger Estes rockets, you get a better finish with your paint I found. And it adds strength without much weight.Well that's 2 members that used epoxy.I think that may be the way to go.I do have an extra kit and may add some body tube to make an Canadian Arrow. |

When I do mine I'll use Pacer Formula 560. I've used this stuff for paper/plastic joints for rocketry since I got back in to rocketry about 7 years ago. It is sold to attach plastic canopies and such to RC airplanes (a replacement for the late lamented Wilhold RC-56).
It's water based and handles very much like wood glue or Elmers.

I'm finishing up modifying a Canadian Arrow into a Hermes A1. I used 30 minute epoxy for the mount rings and with micro-balloons for the fin fillets for the lower fins which are, of course, on the plastic boat-tail. I also used it to glue the body tube to the plastic boat-tail.
Be sure and post pictures of your V-2.

You're welcome to them; PM me with your address. Be forewarned, they're stick-ons and they are only the capsule windows and X-Prize logos. You get to paint the Maple Leafs and stripes on the lower body and fins.

I used 30 minute epoxy on my V-2 that I started about this time last year. I also started papering fins, mostly to eliminate lots of time to fill the balsa grain. After papering fins, and attaching, I decided I did not like the oversized fins, and cut them down to scale. This required removing about 1/2" off the outer edge of the fin. I did add about 1oz. of nose weight for stability.
I had also just received a MakerBeam rail from Amazon, so I used micro rail buttons instead of launch lugs. The rocket flew beautifully on a D12-3. The rail is pictured laying on table next to the V-2.

Fabulous. Diggin' the Rockets of the World Poster in the backgound.
We need to adopt a strict "Pictures or it didn't happen" policy. This isn't some 20th century list-serv . . . .
