Exclamation Astron Mark Paint Scheme

Time to build my all-time favorite again, the Astron Mark. Looking at the JimZ site , the plans show a paint scheme I had never done. It looks to be all white with a red nose cone and black checkerboards on the fins. But, the way it is drawn, it almost looks like the checkerboard may also be continued onto the body tube ( half body or full body length). Has anyone ever seen this scheme in actual print ? Other opinions are welcome

I believe that Mark is referring to the colored line art that is on page 4 and page 6 of the PDF plans.

It's hard to tell if the line running from the nose cone down the body is an actual line or a shading line. My guess is the latter, but I'm not sure.

In any case, it appears to me that the checkerboard is limited to the fins only.

So: Red cone, white body, white and black fins.

This will be challenging.

It might have been an "artist's conception only" design.

Excelsior has a decal set for that pattern. (I have one.) First item on the "Pre-D model rocket decals" page. It even has a nice photo, too.

Thanks stefanj, that is what I was thinking.
The Excelsior link was enlightening. I have been through the site numerous times but seems I have always missed that page. It looks sharp in the yellow. Might just have to build 2 more, one in yellow and one in white.
Thanks for the info MarkII.

Any other color schemes I should know about ?

Although the Excelsior decals are laid out for the longer Mark II fins, I believe, so a little trimming will be in order. The fins on the Mark II are 1/4" longer than those on the Astron Mark; the accompanying photo shows the difference (the bass fin is sized from the Astron Mark, and the paper template is taken from the Mark II). With the airframe combination in the Mark II, the length of the overall model is 3/8" longer than the original version.

Better too long than too short.

You're right, Gordon, of course. And one should always measure twice and cut once!

BTW, your decal package arrived, and was just what I needed. Thanks!

It's always easier to take material away than to try and add it later.

Yes, that's the one. I'll probly build 2 more, one with a white base like yours and one in yellow as shown on the Excelsior page. I got a couple other projects goin right now but will be getting to the Mark in a week or two.
