Default Estes Long Tom

Seems strange typing Estes instead of Centuri in front of that name. (A word of warning. It may seem obvious to some, but typing Centuri Long Tom into Google will bring you not only pics of old Centuri catalogs, but also some men apparently genetically related to donkeys.) I've been working on this since the start of summer and despite having no previous interest in the Long Tom, I've really come to admire the finished product. Reminds me of the Estes Avenger, a design that also screamed "model rocket" to me as a kid. I liked the mix of bare tubes and balsa on this one. Very retro, and I'm really coming to appreciate the old school feelings it stirs up.

.

I was scrolling down the page and initially just saw the face of the first guy. Next scroll was the deal breaker. I blame myself. Even with the Centuri prefix, I should have figured. Not the first time a rocket search has returned something porny.

Never thought of that. Definitely someplace that I might search for a pop up, so a warning to myself.

I flew my Long Tom just last weekend. B6-0 to A8-5. Flew great! I suspect it would do OK on a A8-0 to A8-5, if the winds were low.

I went with more-or-less the standard paint job. Due to a mix-up, I ended up matte-coating the booster and sustainer body, and clear-coating the payload section. But it looks fine anyway!

I like the Long Tom design. Is the smaller body tube a BT50 or something else?

Next I get to see where I've stored the decals. Hopefully it won't be as good as the spot where I hid the two upper stage LT fins. I know it was a book, but I can't remember what I was reading when I started this project. Okay, coloring.

Back in the Centuri days it was their series #8 tube, which is a bit smaller than the Estes BT50. The ST-8 is .908 od, whereas the BT-50 is .976 od.

Not sure what upper tube the Estes re-issue is.
