Default Lost my field; gonna have to join a club

Well, after 6 years of my house bordering a 500+ acre farm that allowed through small "H" power to be flown in my backyard, I'm going to have to join a club to launch.

Moved to a condo which has ZERO room for launching even 1/2A power.

I suppose I could still launch at the previous residence, but that would require more contact with my recent ex, which is something at this point I do not want to do....

I'm probably going to join the closest club to my area of Michigan but I think that unfortunately is about 90 miles away.

Now I'm going to have to pay attention to whether or not a motor is certed and all that other garbage I had no concern for in my yard.

Looks like no more free-for-all flights of B14's and Cox D8's and Composite Dynamics E20's and F45's.
Kinda sucks....I'm going to have to actually follow established RULES....

Rules are for wimps and commies!!! You can do better than that...

Just put down that it's an Estes C6 on the flight card-- nobody'll ever know the difference. Heck our club doesn't even DO flight cards.

Ya know, you could always just make chummy with a local farmer and get permission to launch from his farm... no need to drive 90 miles most likely to use a club field.

OF course you might have to watch some RFD-TV to "get hip" with the latest farm lingo-- after all, it IS "rural america's most-watched network!" (ducks!)

Seriously sorry to hear about your field (and ex/housing) problems but there IS more than one way to skin a cat...

Good luck to you Gh.. OL JR

Sorry to hear about the recent turn of events for you GH.

On the upside, you will be meeting some folks that share your passion for rocketry at a club launch.

Default Only 1hr away

gh,

Your only an hour away from my in-laws in Taylor, MI

I know it doesn't help, but the thought is there anyway.

Keep on flying.

As for flying with non-certed motors, that isn't really a problem - if you belong to NAR, just participate in the OOP motor program and you can fly anything that was certed at least once. Our club will be flying an OOP day at our July picnic / anniversary party - can't wait to try out the A10-0T and A3-0T motors I picked up a while back!

I like that your club does NOT do flight cards.
That way one does not have to tell un-truths like the engine is a C5-3, not a C6-3 or a B14-7 not a B6-6, etc...
That way most can claim PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY !!!!

Yeah but it makes it dern difficult to gather statistics. Fortunately Luke doesn't care how safe we are as long as we don't feed initiators to his cattle.

But if we ever do lose our current field, we have ZERO data to prove how safely we conduct rocketry operations to any landowner we might approach to seek permission. That doesn't seem particularly smart to me.

Plus I'd love to hand out end-of-year awards for "Safest Flyer", "Most Impulse", etc.... I even thought of accomplishment awards for certain criteria to identify our gurus.

Example: Flying a 3-motor cluster flight safely earns a Lvl 1 Cluster badge while doing it 3 times in one day earns you a Lvl 2 Cluster badge. So if a newbie wants to fly a cluster and needs help, they know to seek out the Lvl 2 Cluster person. Or Lvl 1 Cluster person if nobody better is available. And you know, one or more people will seek to own all the badges.

<Insert requisite stinking badges quote here....>

But none of that can be done without flight logging.

I'd probably win the award for "Biggest Outlaw" or "Scofflaw" based on my attitude toward usefulness of rules.

Ya know, good stuff like:
-Toilet paper for wadding that smoulders for half an hour
-Certification ? We dun't need no stinkin' certed eeeengines !
-All rockets 1/4A through Z-power built with the heaviest adhesives/materials possible to maximize coasting inertia as well as potential DAMMAGE in a POWR-PRANG
-Intentional waiver BUSTIN' altitude...oops I thought that F39 was a C11
-Deliberate instability under power for those exciting land shark/cruise missile over the parkin' area flights to keep "spektaters" on their toes fer x-citemunt !
-Igniters ? We dun't need them stinkin thangs neither as long as I got my handy 100' spool of FUSE !

I created an editable flight card for our club. I did it by taking the existing flight card image and used it as a background in an MS Word file. I placed fields in the doc so that I can change them to whatever is required. For some people that may be not such a big deal, but for me when you are trying to get several rockets launched with all of the members of my family, it is a time saver and one less thing to process for a launch. I figure out what I plan to fly the day before, then print out the necessary cards.

Below is a sample .pdf.
