Cassini's last days...
Hello All,
NASA's Cassini Saturn orbiter will conduct its final scientific investigation over the next two weeks, when it dives into Saturn's atmosphere and burns up on September 15. This Centauri Dreams article (see: www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=38375#comments ) includes the timeline of Cassini's final observations of Saturnian moons, the rings, and finally direct in situ investigations of the planet's atmosphere as it burns up, transmitting until the exothermic end. With a little luck, the spacecraft's imaging system will capture a breathtaking view--which has only been seen in paintings (such as Chesley Bonestell's famous works) so far--of the rings from the edge of Saturn's atmosphere, as Cassini looks up at them just as it contacts the atmosphere.
