Default Sputnik Zemli...

Hello All,

Sixty years ago tonight, people all over the world heard *this* sound that came from the sky: http://www.dd1us.de/sounds/sputnk1b.wav . (Other recordings of Sputnik I—as well as recordings of other historic American and Russian satellites and space probes—can be heard here: http://www.dd1us.de/spacesounds%201.html .) Also:

^Here^ www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER0R_2odmeQ is a Sputnik 60th anniversary special video. The satellite's full name (see: http://books.google.com/books?id=Ph...20Zemli&f=false ) was Sputnik Zemli, "fellow traveler of the Earth." While the term "fellow traveler" has become--in the West--a "loaded term" that smacks of treachery, of casting one's lot in with the Communist cause, in the case of the satellite its meaning was simple and entirely apolitical:

More exactly, "sputnik" means anything that travels along with a traveler, such as an alarm clock or a suitcase. The Russian 'nomenclaturial view' was/is that since the Earth is a traveler through space, a satellite--which travels along with the space-traveling Earth--is therefore a sputnik.
