Default Balsa nosecone shoulder repairs

My recent, successful, lawn dart project left me with what had been a nice BNC-70X nosecone. Just begging for something like a Sprint XL project.

But when the body tube was driven over the cone, it took most of the shoulder with it. Is there any reasonable way to re-build the shoulder?

Sure, but it will take some sanding! Build it up with Fill-n-Finish or Bondo Spot Putty and sand it to shape. When you get it the way you want it, soak the area with some thin CA to strengthen the actual shoulder edge. Finish sanding and prep for paint.

It's doable.

Put a section of tube on the shoulder.

Built up the edge with Elmer's Fill N Finish.

Don't try to fill it all at once.

Do it in multiple thin layers, about one thin layer every hour or two.
This will take some time .

When built up past the edge of the body tube, lightly sand flush with the edge.

When smooth, remove the tube.

Coat the repaired section with thin super glue.

Paint.

Still pondering the trust worthiness of advice involving sanding from a fellow whose signature is 'I love sanding'.

The body tube edge reference makes sense to me. Thanks.

While I'm thinking of it, my tub of Elmers filler seems awfully chunky. Like little wood chips. I suppose the lumps sand away, but it always leaves me wondering if I bought the right stuff.

Add some water to it and work it in.

I do, but it doesn't touch the stuff that seems like little chunks of sawdust. I put a little in a bowl, thin a bit with water, and brush it on thin. I try to brush away the chunks. It works out okay on big, even surfaces, like cones and fins. The chunks were a right pain when I went to seal my boy's QCC Explorer.

I've got another Elmers filler that comes in a squeeze tube. But it doesn't seem to dry with any strength. Just dust.

Avoid that "Max" stuff, it's evil.
