SS-520-4 re-flight!
Hello All,
Do you remember JAXA’s failed SS-520-4 launch in January (see: http://asia.nikkei.com/Tech-Science...t-launch?page=1 )? (This NASASpaceFlight thread is loaded with pictures, drawings, and videos, see: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/in...p?topic=40509.0 .) This was the smallest-ever—just 2.6 tonnes—satellite launch vehicle, a two-stage SS-520 sounding rocket that was fitted with a small third stage; it carried a 4 kilogram test satellite called TRICOM. A re-flight, SS-520-5, is being prepared for launch later this year (see: http://asia.nikkei.com/Tech-Science...-launch-in-2017 ), and: Such small satellite launch vehicles would revolutionize the field, enabling an inexpensive “instant launch” capability for emergency communications, as well as providing the means for CubeSats, nanosats, and picosats to be injected into desired orbits when needed. (This would free these satellites’ owners from having to wait for “hitch-hiker” launch opportunities with larger spacecraft, which frequently involves them having to “settle” for less-than-desirable orbits.)
