Micro Maxx use in Estes BT5 rockets
I decided to give Micro Maxx motors a try by installing a mount from Fliskits in an Estes Quark I had sitting around. I'll just say that I'm hooked, not the least because I can launch it in my backyard. Now I'm planning on cloning an Estes Sparrow (the mini engine BT5 rocket, not an A2A missile) and I'm thinking I need to hit up the local hobby shops for BT5 based kits.
If you haven't tried any Micro Maxx stuff yet, I recommend you do. |

I built two MMX rockets a while back but haven't flown either yet. One was a Buck Shot from FlisKits. Here's the other:

Smallest Fat Boy I've ever seen. When Quest says a 50ft diameter flying field is all you need, they mean it. I say, find a baseball diamond or empty lot near you and set those MicroMaxx rockets off.
I just allow the Quark to "tumble" recover, the engine ejects it's self from the rocket and the rocket plummets back to Earth. The engine mount adds a trivial amount of mass so I suppose it's safe to recover this way. |

My Quark comes in ballistic, not tumbling. I wouldn't want to stand under it even if they do call it "featherweight recovery".
Here's a shot of my micro capable rockets. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. The Quark still has mud from it's last ballistic recovery and uses a removable micro mount as does the Mosquito. I painted it with fluorescent red to aid in recovery when using 13mm motors. The Red Max was built with a micro mount in it and uses a printed wrap instead of paint and decals. The Micro (Maxi) Alpha has a micro mount in it also, but isn't BT-5 based like the others. It is painted and has home made waterslide decals. The Mosquito is just a Mosquito.

Here are a few of mine.
I have more but no pictures. The Interceptor was a PIA to put teeny tiny decals on. The Space Plane flys sweet...as long as there is no winds.

Wow, *very* nice. Props for that Interceptor, and the Nike Hercules is gorgeous too (pretty big for MicroMaxx, yes?) I don't think I've ever seen a MicroMaxx model in person. My curiosity is growing. |

Thanks, No offence meant for Quest but their RTF Micro Max models aren't very good. They are kinda heavy...they are plastic bricks! Now the MicroMaxx kits from Fliskits. those are sweet. Balsa, some 3d printed, lightweight. http://www.fliskits.com/products/01prod_fs.htm

Agreed! The FlisKits MMX kits fly well and high! Surprising performance after my first experience with the Quest plastic bricks. The Flis Honest John is a personal favorite - mine is painted like the old Estes HoJo kit. The one one the left is my older build, the new build is on the right. http://modelrocketbuilding.blogspot...20Honest%20John
