Default Coldpower - Valkyrie 1

I don't know anything about the old coldpower rockets but I have always been curious about them, so I bought this one on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/31093161963...984.m1497.l2649

So my question is, what are the chances of this being operational out of the box? What would it take to make something like this operational? Is it possible at all?

Thanks!

Hopefully you talked him down in price. But, yes, it should be flyable if the can of freon that comes with it is full. Check the o-rings that are in the kit to make sure they're not dry rotted. Other than that, just follow the instructions and flip the bird to the tree huggers as you let her rip!

Yes, I made an offer that was quite a bit less than what they were asking.

Thanks for the advise!

Apply to fly it under the NAR Expired Motor Testing Program; I am curious what they would say...

I saw nothing which prohibited it (does not say black powder only or no coldpower.)

Go to page 2 for flying tips and alternative propellants.

I saw one flown on propane once, it seemed to do OK. Unlit of course.

Great link! Thanks for that.

I bought my first Vashion cold power vintage set less than a year ago, and with no prior experience with these type systems, I was kind of in the dark about whether I would be able to potentially pull off a flight or not. The info on that site will be a great step in that direction.

I presume it came with a can of R12.

*Technically* it is unlawful to release R12 into the atmosphere.

*Honestly* it is a waste of precious R12. Perhaps you can use R134a or Duracool or something and save the Ozone and sell that R12 for someone who needs it for it's intended purpose.

Correct... but finding an R-12 system is fairly rare these days... well, except farm equipment... they were the last thing to change over, and they tend to leak more than automotive systems because of all the prolonged vibration and working in extreme heat...

For rocket propellant, canned air is hard to beat...

Ask Wes at Dr. Zooch with any questions... he was tinkering with these cold power motors and did some tests with them...

Later! OL JR
