Default Water based sandable primer

For those wanting to go fully water based in their painting, I'm trying some Rustoleum Sierra S30 Griptec Multi-Surface Sandable Primer.

So far I've used it on one rocket, a Custom Rockets Aztec and I found that it dries fast and has good sandability. I still haven't shot any color coats on the Aztec yet so I can't say how compatible it is with other paints. When I do get around to color coating a rocket I will give an update.

The only drawback to this primer is it only comes in gallon sized cans. When I first got it, I mixed it well and transferred it to a bunch of 20 oz Gatorade bottles.

WHY anyone would want to move from a GOOD solvent based paint system to an INFERIOR water based one is beyond comprehension.
EMBRACE the VOC's of SOLVENT based systems and just say NO to Enviro-WHACKOS.

Um... easy cleanup?

Seriously, dude. Dunno about the OP, but I've ALWAYS chosen that way because of cleanup. Whereas, with spray paint, I don't really care since I rarely get it on me.

Maybe you aren't messy. (Nope, can't even type that and keep a straight face...)

There are lots of reasons to choose water based that have nothing to do with the environment.

Did you spray it with an airbrush? If so, did you have to thin it?

Hi Bill,

I use an automotive touch-up spray gun because none of my airbrushes have a large enough orifice for the size of the solids. It cost $15.00 at Harbor Freight. But if you have an external mix airbrush that might work.

I didn't thin it at all when I used it last but I think I might try thinning it with just a little water.

What color is it? I wonder if it is similar to Zinsser's Fast Prime 2 water based sandable primer. I found a small can of it at a local Menards. It is thick like syrup. It can be thinned to airbrush. On some of my builds, I simply brush it on, especially the balsa parts and sand it smooth. It is white and accepts other paints well.

Don't try top-coating ANY water-based primers with Dope or Lacquer.
It WILL make a mess.

I got the white but it also comes in grey and I think next time I will buy the grey.

Roy,

Sorry to necro-post this thread, but have you continued using this product? I'm pretty much 100% airbrush now using Createx/Wicked/Auto-Air paints, with the exception of using Rustoleum auto filler primer. This Griptec deal might get me away from the rattle can filler primer.

Is it reasonably high solids, comparable to Rusto or Duplicolor filler primer?

Curious to see some examples of how things turned out.

Thanks!

Marc
