Default Vintage Estes F-61 Starfighter build

After building some vintage simple rockets, I decided to step it up with a little more challenging rocket. I just ordered some more Balsa Sealer so I should be ready to go in a few days.

I have a sealed one of these in my build queue along with a Sky Tracer, Scorpius, and Manta Bomber.
Planning to build all four at once, but doubt it will happen before late this fall.
I'm gearing up for R/C flying season.

I finally tried my Deft Lacquer Sanding Sealer again. About two years ago, I tested it, and it gave great results, but it was a little thinner than I liked, so I ended up brushing on four coats. Excellent results.

Yesterday I opened the can, and it seemed a bit thicker since my use of it 2two years ago. It brushed on more smoothly than anything I've used in a LONG time. It also dried very fast. I decided to go ahead and put on four coats, lightly sanding with 320 paper between coats. I waited maybe an hour after applying to sand, but I probably could have sanded sooner. I just did not want to push it. I applied two coats of Tamiya Surface Primer, which has no fillers. It is me ant for plastic models, and I wanted to see what the sealed surface looked like. I did not want to add any fillers.

Here is a picture. It is a little hard to see great detail in a picture of a white nosecone, but it is fully sealed. Brodak may still be easier to use, but this was so easy to brush on, that I'll keep using it. The real selling point, other than I already own it, is that is costs around $11-12 for a quart, the last time I checked Home Depot and Lowes. Brush cleanup done with lacquer thinner.

Lee- did you post your above message in the wrong thread ?
Your post did not seem to be even remotely related to a F-61 Starfighter build.

That's ok, he is trying to give us other options since Aerogloss is no more. I tried the Deft sealer a few years back and I still have the can so I will see if it has thickened since. I did a sided by side comparison between Deft and Aerogloss to see if Deft would be a good replacement. I made a set of fins from the same piece of balsa and began the sealing process. After 4 coats the Aerogloss had sealed the balsa grain, the Deft sealer still had a lot of grain showing. I then primed and painted the fins. There was no comparison, Aerogloss did a much better job after only 4 coats. The other issue I had was adhesion of the primer to the Deft, the primer began to lift. This was the only time I ever tried it and decided to stick with Aerogloss. I say if it is working then stick with it since it is easy to get and cheaper than balsa sealer.

Try reading scigs30's last sentence in the first post.

There is one more issue with Deft sanding sealer......You can't buy it at the stores anylonger.....
Lowes and Home Depot stopped selling it the only place to buy it is at Amazon. I opened up my can from a few years ago and tried it out on some 1/8 balsa sheet. First the smell and fumes are more intense than Brodak, and side by side did not fill the grain as good with 4 coats. For the price it will get the job done but will take more coats. Sanding sealers dope based or laquer based use the same filler/soap material. Control Line builders have been making their own for years using dope and zinc stearate to fill balsa before painting for a smooth finish. Since Brodak makes products specifically for CL models I think they make their own sealer by adding zinc stearate to Randolph Dope. I am not saying anything bad about Deft sealer and I do think it is a good option for a replacement but most people would have to order it online. They also make a spray can wood sealer, but trust me it does not work well with balsa fins.

This was a fun little bird and more challenging than my last couple of vintage builds. As you can see the plastic parts are the same parts that came in the Centuri fighter jet series. The yellowed parts on the left are from my Centuri F-16, and on the right from my Starfighter. The canopy gets glued onto the nose cone with Testors cement after the decal is placed and the canopy will get masked before painting. I sealed all the balsa with 4 coats of Brodak Balsa Sealer and will prime everything tonight. Then the fun part of masking and painting over the next few days.

Where's the pic with the yellowed Centuri parts ?
I don't see them on the left, right or any other area of these pics.
