To fly or not to fly!
Ok, the weather is lousy, cold, raw, drizzle, field is wet.
Do you fly or not? |

My real guideline is:
Is it raining? If you don't mind a very light drizzle then fine, buy I fly a lot of paper rockets and they don't get along with water at all. So I really don't fly in the rain. Is it windy? NAR rules say you can't fly in winds higher than 20, but I really don't like to go above 12 or so due to drifting and weathercocking. If gothic those questions are no (or a qualified no if I REALLY want to fly or it's a contest) and I can dress for the weather, then I'll go for it. Snow or cold are fine. But if the field is really wet, I usually bag it. But that's just me -YMMV Greg |

The weather here in Mobile has been really lousy for flying -- temps in the upper 90's to low 100's, very dry, about 20" below normal rainfall, total state-wide burn ban in effect... I'll take some wet, cold, saturating rain right now! Got any to spare?

Had this decision yesterday AM, actually. Had a launch scheduled for our homeschool group (launching the rockets we built in a session a few weeks back), but the weather looked really iffy. Forecast was overcast with 50% chance of showers, and T-storms later in afternoon.
Unfortunately, the next date I had available to schedule a makeup launch was over a month and a half from now. So I looked at the radar on weatherunderground.com, and it looked like a single front that would pass over the launch site, with not much behind it for several hours. In the end, I gave a "GO" for the launch, went out and set up the range in a bit of rain. The rain stopped by the time the kids arrived, and we managed to get in 3 hours of flying with no more than a slight mist at times. 5-10 MPH winds made "A" motors, streamers, and saucers the order of the day, but everyone had a great time nonetheless.

I fly!
CMASS had a launch scheduled today. We had paid to rent the field, and no refund if we didn't fly, so we flew. It was actually a pretty good day. It was cool (mid to upper 50's after nearly 100 on Thursday), and the forecast was for possible showers, but we had no real rain to speak of. A little mist, but nothing that would harm painted models. The grass was wet, but it was not a problem on the mowed part of the field. I had to venture into the tall grass and came with my jeans wet up to the knees. Wind was practically non-existent. It was a small crowd, but we managed to get just over 100 models flown.

The forecast for the Willamette valley today was perfect, but it turned out to be way cloudy with periods of rain.
But, this being Oregon, we went ahead and launched anyway. |
