Default Your stash, your round'tuit pile

I decided to inventory my stash of un-built kits today. I was trying to organize things a bit, to put like kits in the same box, and decided to take a detailed inventory while I was at it.

With one exception, this is a count of unstarted kits and does not include any kits in various stages of completion. Nor does it include any finished kits (which I swag would number around 100). The one exception is half an Edmonds Geminee (I only needed to replace the half that flew away so I have a spare half left over).

Here's a summary of the inventory:
ASP 2
BFTPR 1
Custom 1
Edmonds 6.5
Estes 42
Flis 1
Holverson 3
Lawndart 1
Quest 16
Semroc 7
Squirrel Works 7
Sunward 1
Tango Papa 1

It totals to about 90 kits. I don't collect them although a few of these were added as spares. So basically, I have ~80 kits in my round 'tuit pile, kits I expected to build when I acquired them

Given that I scratch build at least 3 birds for every kit I start, I could be at this for a long, long time without ever buying another kit

Seriously, it does affect my buying habits. There are times when I want to buy a kit, but won't allow myself knowing how many I have in my stash. And, looking at the stash, there are certainly several in there that are very low priority - for example, there are at least three new Semroc kits I've love to get, and, if gotten, would certainly jump many in the queue. But I'm hard pressed to add to the already long queue.

I know there are guys out there with much larger stashes. Some in multiple categories such as model cars and model airplanes. One guy I know has 300 unbuilt car kits So I'm a long way from ranking anywhere on the chart But I do have a seemingly unwieldy stash.

Maybe I should pare it down some.

What's your backlog look like? Do you trim out the less interesting kits? Where/how do you sell them?

Doug

I no longer have a stash or round tuit pile...I have a COLLECTION of unbuilt kits.

The build queue of kits I have started and brought to various stages of completion:

Semroc Magnum Hornet
Semroc L'il Ivan
Scratch BT-60 based MPR
Clone Hobgoblin (needs nosecone painted)
Clone BT-80 Baby Mama upscale

All of the above are assembled, some primed, some in paint.

The completed ones are:

Groony German Medal
Clone Big German Medal
QuasarOne Cirrus I
Quest Astra
Clone Native American-D

Wish list rockets: I'm going MPR from here on out!

Polecat Goblin (thinking about the 2.6" or 3" or maybe even the 4" version)
BSD Diablo(!!!)
Binder Thug
Onyx
L'il Nuke
Darkstar 29 Lite

Looking forward to flying some in October when flying season resumes here in Cali.

EDIT: Items by a certain company deleted. Intellectual property, doncha know. Although, the doctrine of Fair Use does allow for "parody".

Doug-
I have a stash of kits about as large as yours but am not worried about it.
I probably clone one rocket for every 1.5-2 kits I build.
If your queue is too deep and there are some rockets you know you won't get to or don't particularly like for some reason now, put 'em on ebay and get the new kits you really want.

That's probably what I oughtta do. I've sold three kits in 10 years because I knew I wouldn't get around to them. But a bunch of these I wonder if anybody would want Seems I've accumulated a few that are pretty lame. Not sure how, but I reckon some of them were door prizes and the like. OTOH, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'll put some of them on ebay and see what happens.

Retired with Way Too Many Kits

I've had my kits in an Excel file for many years. I used to just enter the price I paid, and now I try to list the average price that Gerry Fortin lists on his website, which chronicles the eBay selling prices of kits. My list numbers 99 kits, and over $5K, which I think is a pretty realistic value. I just shared the findings with my wife, telling her to auction these if I get run over by a bus ...

I've got 5 Saturn Vs -- two 2001 (one in progress), two 2157 30th anniversary, and my latest prized possession, a Mike Dorffler-signed NARAM-52 commemorative 2157. Also have 3 Estes Saturn 1Bs, an Apogee 1B, and a Semroc 1B. With the exception of the newest V, I do plan to build these, mostly in retirement (about 2 years away). I've tried to buy kits I missed out on when I was in my late teens and in college. With the exception of going crazy buying both models of new Interceptors using Hobby Lobby 40% off coupons, I have mostly 1-2 of each kit. One to build and fly, and a backup. Most kits are Estes, and sadly lacking are any Centuri. I've been watching eBay, but I tend to miss out on the really interesting ones due to bidding frenzy!

I'm not the kind of collector that wants to have 1 of every kit. Some I just have zero interest in, which includes a LOT of the Estes lineup over the past 10 years. I am definitely going to buy many of the new "re-releases", since I think many of them truly are classics.

I probably scratch build 1-2 for every kit I build.

I'll convert my list to text and post later.

Lately, it seems every time I decide on a new kit/scratchbuilt to work on, something else comes along to make me change my mind.

So much new product has been released by Quest, Semroc, even Estes, that I find myself changing gears to work on a different product.

Case in point, all the new Semroc RTB kits. Bought all of them at NARAM-52, along with a Sirius Deimos, four Red River Rocketry kits and two of the NARAM-52 special Satellite Interceptor models by Estes.

So many rockets, so little time.

Bob

P.S.: Mike Fritz told me that Estes made 500 of the 'special' NARAM-52 Satellite Interceptor kits. 250 were numbered for people who registered for NARAM while the remaining 250 were not and sold at their field pavillion/tent for $10.00 each.
