Best primer question
What's the pest primer to use on LPR/MPR model rockets - Balsa, cardboard, wood? I currently use Createx paints for color over coats. My primer always seems to crack my glue (Elmer's White) fillets.

Best- Pactra Prep - that is compatible with ALL topcoats including Butyrate Dope, but has not been available for 15 years.
Close- LACQUER automotive primer. Scuff it slightly with fine wet-or-dry paper and virtually anything as far as topcoat bites into it well.

Yep, lacquer primer. You can buy it by the quart or gallon at any auto parts store and spray it with your air brush, or even brush it on in a pinch. For convenience, Plasti-Kote and Dupli-Color both have good rattle can lacquer primers.

I use Rustoleum White 2X Primer from Home Depot. I think it's an enamel product. You can spray it on heavy as heck and it just fills everything. Really hard to make it run. If you do, it's easy to wet sand off. I've found it to be a very forgiving product. It lays down real nice and smooth. Usually no wet sanding before I air brush it with a color coat.

You can topcoat a Lacquer primer with anything. Don't ever try topcoating one of those LOUSY enamel-base primers with lacquer. You WILL regret it.
There should not even be such a product. If the commiefornians dont like all the VOCs in lacquer products, the answer to that is TOUGH ! SUCK IT UP AND DEEL WITH IT !!!

I hate enamel-based primers also, but unfortunately, Testors enamel gray primer is the ONLY thing that I know of (besides Krylon H2O) that's safe to use on foam. I primered an Estes MIRV with Testors primer last Saturday before I left for AL and it took 5 days to dry.
If anybody knows of something else that's safe to use on foam, please tell me!

KILZ is high solids and is halfway between a Lacquer and enamel in the solvent package.
Very easy to sand if one gives several hours to dry and is foam compatible. Give it a try.

If one sprays in thin coats one can probably lay down 3 coats in an evening.
Sand the next day.
