Default Estes Cosmic Interceptor build

It's time to challenge myself with an alleged "tuffie": the Estes Cosmic Interceptor #1351.

Indeed! Since the outer tube of the engine mount is one of the BT couplers, I insert the engine mount out tube into one of the BT's to ensure the roundness as I glue one of the engine mount CR's onto the end of it. TBC

Now I fillet the CR to BT joint internally with epoxy using a long stick for an applicator. I'll repeat the steps for the CR on the other end. TBC

After doing the same treatment to the other end of the engine mount outer tube, I mount (1) vane onto the the BT50 engine tube. This one vane is to register the outer tube and CR assembly against. (NOTE: the slot in the vanes that allows for clearance of the EH retainer had to be deepened on (4) of the vanes so the root edges of the vanes would fully join with the BT50 due to the runout cause by the EH.)

The forward end of the engine mount assembly and the BT50 are epoxied together. I then assemble the rest of the vane array. This is fun!

While the white glue is setting on the root edges of the vanes, now is a good time to attached a WAY overengineered shock cord leader: I've tied a length of 100 lb kevlar to the front stub of the BT50 and enrobed the attachment with epoxy. Before the resin hardened I slid (2) 29mm thrust rings ahead of the knot with more epoxy in between the (2) rings. The Kevlar is too long at this time, but I'll cut it to "non-zippering" length later. TBC

I've now applied epoxy "micro fillets" to the vanes using a bamboo grilling skewer and the engine mount is complete and "bombproof"..

Time for a Scotch and a Boddingtons. Happy New Year and good night! TBC

Back to the C.I.

Using the (so beloved that I wouldn't know what to do without it) dead flat Corian slab covered with wax paper. I construct the side fin assemblies and register the root edges against a straight edge fence. I then glue the long brace onto each assembly using a small piece of angle aluminum (left over from a Rokitflite kit) and a clothespin as a square. TBC

The seams of the PNC are absolutely wretched! I'm not going to bother with a photo because most of you know what I'm talking about already. The seams are far worse than just needing sanding--they need filling. I'll fill the seams with squadron green and "The Vixen" has already volunteered to sand them afterward. TBC
