Default Estes Der Red Max and Goblin build

I am building these two kits for my brother to launch. The build is basic right out of the bag with no changes. Put together with Elmers Glue All and used Elmers Glue All for the fillets. I brushed on 4 coats of Aerogloss sealer and sprayed the red and yellow old Krylon with no primer. I no this is how models used to be painted and with the no recoat window it is pretty easy. Ok the Chris Model Rocket Blog he has a couple of old builds from the 70s that look great and were never primed. Without primer you really have to build clean that's for sure. Also the weight difference is definitely noticed between primed and unprimed of course unprimed being much lighter. The finished Der Red Max and Goblin are heavier than the two I am building right now. I am painting as per the vintage instructions, light coats with sanding in between, of course with old Krylon this makes it possible. By the way Krylon industrial is still making the old formula paints just under new name, Krylon Acrylic-Quik. The pictures of the Centuri rockets are from Chris website that were built back in the 70s and not using primer.

Those look pretty good to me - what makes "old" Krylon better? I've had all the typical problems with 2X - does Acryli-Quik not blob and splatter as bad?

Old Krylon dries fast and has no redcoats window. Old Krlon is thinner and can run if too much is sprayed on thick, takes multiple coats. It sands easy and never blobs out or splatter like Rusto

Only draw back is that the old Krylon gloss pales in comparison to that of the 2x Rustoleum. After you use multiple coats of the Krylon, the weight will be nearly the same, as well. Give and take. They each have advantages and disadvantages.
Of course, YMMV!

You are correct about the gloss, most enamels are more glossy. As far as weight my Krylon painted rockets are considerably lighter than the Rusto painted rockets. I really did try to give Rusto a try, but the inconsistency with the quality was a waste of time for me. Also the nozzles were horrible and Rustoleum knows it. Back in the day Rusto worked fine minus the recoat window. Searching the web it appears the spattering is a common issue. Personally I have a lot of rockets to build so I keep my builds simple. I like smooth grain free balsa but I don't mind spirals showing. When Rusto works it is great, but when it spatters I have to wait, sand and buy a new can. Personally I would use Testors but it is pretty pricey.

Glad you're having great results! If I get a can of 2x that spatters (and I have ), I take it back to Ace hardware or Home Depo and get a new one.
Never had a problem, thank goodness. You're so right, it sucks when it misbehaves. Is the problem just in the nozzle?

Rusto told me they changed their consumer paints for federal standards, what ever that means. That's why Krylon can only sell their old formula as Industrial paint.

The "Acrylic" in Krylon Acryli-Quik is for "Acrylic LACQUER" which is why it dries so fast and can be recoated anytime. It has a fairly hot solvent package for fast-drying, but is not nearly as fast/hot as Dope. That is why you can get away with it on plastic, but you cannot with Dope unless you spray like 4 coats of primer on plastic before spraying with Dope.
The Industrial/Acryli-Quik/Old Formula Krylon is the ONLY Krylon worth buying. The newer hardwars-store stuff is pure crap.
The only hardware/home store paint I buy anymore is Rust Oleum. If you buy their 'traditional' stops-rust line it is still their original formula. It takes a while to dry, but it is R/C Glow-Fuel Proof up to 40% nitro which is almost as good as Dope and nobody runs more than 40% except for pylon racing.

Here are pictures of the finished builds, not too shabby for not using a primer. My first Goblin and Der Red Max weigh in at 2.8 oz and that's with Aerogloss sealer, primer and Rusto paint. The newly built rockets sealed with Aerogloss sealer, no primer painted with Old Formula Krylon....Red Max 2.4oz and Goblin 2.3oz. That's with supplied recovery system and clay weight for the Goblin.
