I absolutely abhor enamel primers. They NEVER sand decently and always clog up sandpaper whether dry or wet sanding or even with sanding film.
Primers should be lacquer based, PERIOD !
Kilz is technically not lacquer based but it is not an enamel either and fills/sands well.
Lacquer primers work with ALL topcoats, enamels and Kilz do NOT.
I only use Kilz if tube spirals are very deep and I intend on using Enamel topcoat.
Usually I topcoat with Aero Gloss or Brodak dope shot out of a spray gun, necessitating a Lacquer primer.
The best model primer ever was Pactra Prep.
Was dope/lacquer/enamel/urethane/epoxy compatible, dried quickly like dope, filled almost as well as Kilz. Unfortunately it has not been available for over 20 years. I'm down to a quart and use only very sparingly. Brodak primer is almost as good though, but you have to have a spray gun or airbrush.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

That’s odd. I heard it dries fast, usually an indicator that something is not enamel. I’ll stick with Rustoleum I guess. It’s fine under lacquer.

I have been using Krylon Tough Coat primer and covering it with Krylon Acryli Quick Gloss White on all my builds for over a year and have had no issues.

I then apply Tamiya spray paint colors over the Gloss White.

Thanks Bob,

I’ve wanted to try the Tough Coat ever since John Boren mentioned it. But I had bought a lot of the Rustoleum Filler/Primer on sale via walmart.com, a real convenience, since orders ship to any store free. My favorite primer is Duplicolor primer, but it’s really expensive.

Since you are a Tamiya fan, try their Fluorescent Red sometime. It’s very glossy, unlike any fluorescent paint I’ve ever used. I’m also a fan of their surface primer, great on plastics since it does not have fillers that would dull details. Also enables lacquers to be used over plastic without fear of crazing.

I have my nice camera and was able to get some close up pictures showing how well the Brodak Balsa sealer does at sealing the balsa with no primer or fillers. Also test glided the glider and she did very well. The final weight of the glider with clay added is under 2oz. I built the newer version of the Scissor Wing Transport a few years ago and now I am thinking maybe I will build the all wood version next.

From Krylon:

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Krylon. We are grateful to have a chance to help.

Yes, Acryli Quik can be used over the Tough Coat Primers. The recoat time are usually before 1 hour or after 5 days for the Primer.

We appreciate you letting us have the chance to help. If there's anything I didn't answer today, please don't hesitate to write back and I'll reply as quickly as possible.

Respectfully,
Roger

Great looking build. If it flies as nice as it looks, you will be one happy rocketeer!
