Exclamation 2014 Jarosch Cup Cheddar Chucking Challenge Guidelines

General Guidelines for All Jarosch Cup Events

1. The Jarosch Cup is a traveling trophy in honor and remembrance of Fred Jarosch, beloved long-time WOOSH member and avid rocketeer.

2. A rocketry contest will be held annually at the WOOSH "Eat Cheese or Fly" launch to determine who will hold the Jarosch Cup for the following year.

3. The holder of the Cup shall be responsible for planning and hosting the contest for the following year.

The ECOF 2014 Jarosch Cup - Cheddar Chucking Challenge

This year's Jarosch Cup event is a little unusual. As always, it will be centered on cheese, but it will also be heavily reliant on 1 particular motor: The Cessaroni Dual-Thrust 24mm G107. You read that right, it's a 24mm G ... plus it's a dual thrust motor! That is too cool not to incorporate into this event.

To make this event more accessible to everybody, Wildman has agreed to the following deal:
- Buy 2 motors at regular or Wildman Club price and get the case free.
- Buy 3 motors at regular or Wildman Club price and get the case AND closure free.

Be aware that this motor is considered a high power motor and can only be flown by somebody with an L1 certification or higher. However, non-certified flyers can participate in this event provided they have a certified SPONSOR. This individual will help guide the construction of the rocket, be responsible for doing a preflight check, assist in the purchase of the motor, and probably be the one signing the flight card. Most, if not all, certified flyers are more than happy to be a sponsor – many even consider it an honor. In addition, it is a great way for non-certified flyers to take their first step toward becoming a high-power rocketeer!

The winner of this challenge will have the lowest score based on the following 3 criteria:
- Weight of the ready-to-fly rocket (in ounces, rounded up)
- Distance of the cheese (see #5 below) from that rocket's launch pad in paces (maximum of 50) by any adult 18 years or older who is not the flyer or an immediate family member.
- Whether or not the rocket remains undamaged in such a way as to be immediately reloaded and flown again safely. A penalty of 25 points shall be given for any rocket that cannot be immediately flown again as determined by Marc Stevens.

The final score will be calculated using the following formula: Weight + Paces (maximum of 50) + Penalty. For example, a 10-ounce rocket that lands 20 paces from the pad and is immediately re-flyable would achieve a score of 30 (10+20+0=30). A rocket that weighs 32 ounces, lands 100 paces away, and cannot be immediately re-flown would receive a score of 107 (32+50+25=107).

In the event of a tie (at any level), Marc Stevens will solicit the general consensus of the crowd via applause regarding the design and quality of the 2 rockets. The rocket found to be more “pleasing” to the crowd would be awarded a bonus of -1 point. Should this result in another tie; the same method will be used again until one rocket can be declared the victor.

Rules

1. There can only be one rocket entered per registered flyer and one qualifying flight per rocket. Family members may each enter an independent / individual entry.

2. All flyers must fill out the entry form that will be available at the registration table. The completed form should be turned into the registration table immediately following the qualifying flight.

3. The motor for the Cheddar Chucking Challenge MUST be (1) Cessaroni 24mm G107. Larger motor mounts may be adapted down to accommodate this 24mm diameter motor.

4. Recovery of rocket shall be by any commonly accepted and SAFE recovery method. This includes tumble recovery provided it’s SAFE. The rocket will be disqualified if it is not approved by the RSO for safe flight.

5. In order to qualify, the rocket must have a 1/2" cube of cheddar cheese onboard in such a way as to be visible at all times from RSO approval to rocket recovery. Official cheese cubes will be available at the registration table. If the cheese cannot be readily seen by the RSO, the entry will be disqualified. The cheese and/or cheese container must remain firmly attached to the heavier portion of the rocket (dictated by common sense) at all times. If the two become separated in any way during flight, the entry will be disqualified.

6. The qualifying flight will be identified to the RSO at the rocket's safety check immediately prior to the flight. A pre-printed sticker will be affixed to the flight card identifying it as a Jarosch Cup participant. The fully loaded rocket will be weighed by the RSO and the weight of the rocket in ounces will be noted on the entry form. The entrant must also show the RSO that the cheese is visible and meets the stipulations of rule #5. That fact should be noted on the form.

7. The entrant must provide his or her own "pacer" for measuring the distance (in paces) from the rocket's launch pad to the final resting location of the cheese. This distance should be noted on the entry form. If the number of paces exceeds 50 (roughly 150 feet), the distance shall be logged as 50 paces. Again, if the cheese and larger portion of the rocket have separated, the entry will be disqualified.

8. The "pacer" will then determine if the rocket is or isn't immediately re-flyable and note it on the entry form. If the larger portion of the rocket has separated from the cheese, the rocket is considered not to be re-flyable and should be disqualified. We are relying on the honor system here, so please be honest.

If a clear determination cannot be made, Marc Stevens should inspect the unaltered rocket for a final verdict.

9. The completed entry form must then be turned in at the registration table.

10. NAR Safety Code must be followed at all times.

Indeed it did. I felt that the distance was too small of a target.

Exclamation Jarosch Cup Entry Form

Attached is the entry form for the 2014 Jarosch Cup Cheddar Chucking Challenge. Feel free to print it out in advance or simply pick one up at the registration table on either Saturday or Sunday.

I've also attached the guidelines and rules for those who may have missed them.

If you haven't created your JC entry yet, there's still time! Remember, you can always retrofit an existing rocket to participate in this event.

Hope to see a TON of entries!
