OK, who's going to build a flyable one first?

Heartily Seconded! Even though the USAF is very reticent to discuss what the X-37 will do between orbital insertion and re-entry, it isn't too difficult to surmise. Although electronic cameras have improved dramatically since the days of the spy satellites that dropped film capsule "buckets" to Earth, film cameras still provide excellent coverage of targets of interest, and the X-37 could return them and their film directly to secure landing sites. Also, electronic cameras could be used with no need to send their image data through a radio link that could be jammed or intercepted--the X-37 could also return them (and their onboard data storage media) to secure landing sites. This would also be the case for electronic intelligence equipment or any other kinds of sensors that the spacecraft might carry in its payload bay.

Yep. If it's not about classified studies in the hypersonic flight regime or breakthrough metallurgy/materials, then it's all about the intel.
If the X-37 is nothing more than an intel platform, it could be wind up being an SR-71 on steroids, or at least the like the piggy-back device the SR-71 carried on a few flights. However, unlike the Blackbird, the overflight paths are going to be rather linear. At least the SR-71 could be steered, even though it took a few states to turn it. Back in the day, when an SR-71 parked where I was stationed (which was rare), they cordoned off the area and posted some able-bodied airmen with M-16s around it. After my shift ended I went to go look at it. It is the fastest looking thing I have ever seen that wasn't moving, truly Born to Run (queue Bruce Springsteen music here ...). Greg |
