Quick & Dirty Mercury mod
Wanted to have at least a sense of interior on the 1/35 Mercury capsule so I prototyped this. I drilled and dremeled out the porthole and boxed in a shallow panel. With a clear glazing it will look different from the "other" Mercury models and still not be OTT on time. Once dry I will paint the interior some color - not sure if it should be gray, green or non-spec blue. Have to be careful to seal up the box to prevent pressure drop during ejection.

Tower attached awaiting glazing. Now, was it flat or curved?

I don't know if it was curved or flat, but to hazard a guess on what a project manager would do to get it "out the door" under time constraints: flat.

Short of decals this is it. I went with the Model Master Light Green to suggest the side of an instrument panel; given the location this would have been right around the bottom of the instruments. Flat acetate curved to the interior. I also blocked off the base with a CR and will use a piece of Kevlar through the capsule shoulder to attach the chute.
As an addendum I think that I would assemble the capsule, drill and clear the porthole, paint the exterior, remove the cross piece in the shoulder base and then work from there. It makes more sense to me to simply seal the base as opposed to relying on the interior box to take the pressure - although with this model I suppose it is more pushed out than popped out.

I suppose to really model Freedom 7 you would need to add the second porthole and then overlay the hatch with sheet stock and rplicate the bolts. Also found that you can take a ping pong ball half and sand to fit the interior and eliminate the whole "flat earth " perspective. Perhaps on the next one.

Far too kind. All I know is that I need to submit lower density images. Blowing up the image really shows every flaw. Makes a dust mote look like a baseball sitting on the spacecraft skin!
