What a coincidence! I just finished mine also--except I assembled it incorrectly. (can you spot the flaw?)

After shooting the entire model with gloss white "The Vixen" hand painted the Dunklegrun, Zinc Chromate Green, and Gunship gray sections.

After comparing your photos with my build I see that you attached the trailing edge of the "wings" incorrectly. During my own build I noticed a conflict between Shrox's pictorials and text. The engine mount was shown as flush with a junction point in the trailing edge of the wings. which would require a 5/8" projection of the engine mount rather than the 1/4" projection as called for in the text. I emailed Doug for a clarification and he said to go ahead and make it 5/8" rather than 1/4", which I did.

The biggest problem I had with this build was with the painting which required a ton of careful masking to accommodate the seven colors of paint. The build might have been level three but the painting was an S.O.B. !

Did you construct yours from Doug's original plan set as a "scratch build" or buy the Apogee kit?

Good to know about the engine mount variations - I’ll look for that when I finally get around to building mine from the plan pack.

If guys are your level think it’s a bear to paint I might have to do a simplified scheme when I get that far.

I am planning on replacing the NSFK decal with a West German flag though. Not trying to be PC or anything - I built more than one F104 Starfighter and F4 Phantom in West German livery and always liked the look. Yeah, I know the Iron Cross roundel isn’t right

I think a gray on white with black trim might give it more of a "naval look". Did the Germans have a navy other than their U-boats?

While I've not seen the instructions that come with the kit, perhaps Apogee should include a supplement with their instructions, illustrating the correct layout of those two piece fins?

(Actually, three pieces, but the angled fin at the wing tips wasn't the culprit)

IIRC the surface combatants that weren’t the U Boats was the “High Seas Fleet”.
Bismarck, Tirpitz, Graf Spee, etc.

It was easy for ME to paint—I just asked “The Vixen” to do it for me.
