They might feel the deceleration if the chute failed. At least until they became one with the water.

Arcas, anyone?
Comrades:
Pictures of my Rescue Arcas. Not particularly bad shape; missing a shock cord; fins were dinged up and the Fokker Red dope had cracked on the nose cone. The area around the unusual fin mounts for this kit were more or less blobs of what turned out to be many, many coats of white dope. First picture shows the as-received condition; replacement parachute and not one, not two but three replacement tri-fold shockcord mounts indicate this was probably a much-flown bird. The fins were pretty badly beat up. Second picture shows a close up after I started working. I did NOT remove the fins but I did replace sections of leading edges, trailing edges and added a wedge of balsa to one to straighten it out. I really sanded and smoothed the areas around the fin mounts. Using sanding sticks I was able to more or less shape them into the right general forms. I removed the lumpy dope blobs and added scale bolt holes. Some Bondo was used here and there. I think its a pretty good approximation of what a skillful kid would have built in the '70's. To REALLY fix it up would have required cutting off the fins but that would have exceeded the Rescue spirit. I also added a section of BT-55 to bring it to scale length. The kit comes with a BT-55 section of 16.5 inches (usually) but the proper length of BT-55 should be 20.24" from end to top of the boat tail according to Rockets of the World. I added a suitable length of BT-55 and epoxied a Kevlar leader through the coupler. Some fresh elastic to the end of the leader and the kit was ready for paint. I sanded the original paint, removed the old decal, built up the new section of BT-55 with Dupli-Color filler primer and when I thought it was close enough , I primed with Rustoleum grey primer. I chose the Atlantic Research Corp. display scheme of red nose, parachute compartment and two red stripes down the sides over a white motor. Rustoleum Gloss White and Sunrise Red were the colors. I tried to find decals in my spares box but no luck. I bought some from an on-line vendor but they came with a blueish background that showed on the white so I couldn't use them. May need to call Tom at Tango Papa. Decals or no, it's ready to launch. A fun rescue

That Arcas looks really nice for a new build, let alone an eBay rescued junk heap.

I agree. I’m impressed with the obvious patience/tenacity to turn your finds into great looking models.

Thanks, guys.
Here's a picture of the Arcas, against a darkening Texas sky, ready to launch with decals kindly provided by Bill E. Other than a Rescue Interceptor that has come to a screeching halt for lack of tip tanks, I'm out of rescues. Pretty slim pickings on eBay lately and I've been busy learning about glide-back recovery. I have a Scout launch with my nephew coming up in September and of course, we have October Skies in early October that usually brings out my family so I'll post some Rescue launch pictures soon.

Mark - You have done a fine job giving that Arcus the glory it deserves.
If you are truly out of rescues, I have a bunch of old Centuri and Estes rockets in need of attention.

They're harder to come by these days. It's like a rusted out Roadrunner with Swiss Cheese frame rails. People thing their junk is going to finance retirement. That collection of folded, spindled and mutilated birds on Ebay is the perfect example.
