Default Estes #0896 Mini Patriot - Fins

The original kit used matteboard fins. You have an option here for either 0.05" matteboard or 1/16" balsa.

Default Estes #1341 World Federation Star Probe - Fins

In the kit, you are given some square stock to cut to length for dowel attachments and other detail bits. They're all the same length, and all of the fins are 1/8" sheet, so I just added all of the detail pieces to the sheet for the laser to do the work. The ringfin pylons are similar, so I just added them in to simplify things.

Now, locating that nose cone...

Hi Craig;

Checking my kit, I can confirm that the square stock used to support the dowels is 1/8" basswood. Fins are all 1/16" thick; the strip stock provided to make the support pylons for the ring fin is 3/16" x 13/16" x 9" balsa.

Hope this helps;

Hi Craig;

I'm traveling for the next week, so I'll have difficulty following your thread. But checking very quickly, I notice some errors/typos in your nose cone listing. For example, #1341 World Federation Star Probe - that nose is a PNC-50SP, not a PNC55-SP.

Also, the #1378 Firecat had a PNC-102 (Estes just used the Centuri nomenclature for this one), and the #1915 Harpoon used a PNC-50U.

Hope you're able to continue the good progress; I'll catch up when I get back.

Default Estes #1341 World Federation Star Probe - Fins -- REVISION

Based on John Brohm's observations, I got these patterns wrong. The shapes and sizes may be correct, but the thicknesses were a bit off.

Here's what I've done:
  • The triangular fins have been moved over to a 1/16" balsa sheet.
  • The ring pylons have been moved to a 3/16" balsa sheet.
  • The probe support and remaining detail strips are now on a 2" x 2" x 1/8" basswood sheet.

The pylons have been measured to fit the gap between BT-50 and BT-80, with only fractional overage. This allows for a snug fit with minor sanding required.

Thanks, John. I've made the corrections and they'll be available with the next update.

No problem, Craig. For nose cones, this reference might also help:

Five sheets, three patterns. Four of the five can be cut from a single 36" length of balsa.
