Default Replacement Mercury capsule

Comrades:

I'm doing a stupid, stupid rescue of an eBay Estes K-41 Mercury-Redstone. I requested a fresh scan of the cardstock capsule wrap in the Wanted: section.

I got no response.

The JimZ scan has lighting issues in that there is a dark stripe through the lower section that throws the grey-scale off when you print it. If you build it, at the point where the wrap comes together, one side is noticeably darker than the other. The size is spot-on and fits well, but the grey-scale is visibly off.

I'm no Photoshopper but I have attached my corrected .jpg in case someone else is restoring a K-41 or wants to try a scratch-build of a Mercury-Atlas using the Semroc reproduction K-41 capsule on a Series 275 Atlas. I used the Brightness and Contrast tools in Photoshop to balance the JimZ scan. I also removed the Freedom 7 marking which was all wrong for a window capsule. It was easier to take off the lettering than it would have been to replace the window with two portholes for Shepard's capsule. The wrap will now work for any of the other five Mercury missions, perhaps using the old Revell capsule marking decals which are "close enough" in size.

I printed mine on 200g matte photo paper and gave it a couple of coats of Rustoleum matte clear before I cut it out and glued it on the balsa. I'll post some pictures soon. If you do use it, make sure you select Actual Size when you print it out.

I'd still love to have a fresh scan of an original wrap. With a fresh scan, I could probably do the porthole version. So if anybody has an unbuilt, open K-41, please send me a scan.

I think that pattern is for the Estes Mercury Capsule kit (651-PSM-1). I have that kit and recognize that wrap. Attached is a page from the 1969 Estes catalog of that kit.

Mark, I should have the K-41 Mercury Redstone (unopened) somewhere in my stash in one of the boxes in my garage. Tomorrow evening, I'll see if I can find it and scan the cardstock wrap of the Mercury capsule for you.

Thanks Guys.

I didn't recognize Joe's pattern. If Dave can find it, I will share the results.

Default Mercury Capsule

The one time I saw an old Estes Mercury Redstone kit, the capsule was carved from wood. Did the wrapping go around that ?

Yes. It was a balsa nose cone with paper wraps. I have one around here somewhere.

What tbzep posted is what I have. Just came from the garage to try to find my unopened kit, after a about 15 minutes of looking the heat and humidity became too much. Mark, were you able to get the exact copy from tbzep? Let me know if you need it.

It was scanned at 300 dpi. It should be accurate if printed at the same resolution.
