Cloning the Astron Scamp
I'm taking a short sabbatical from building the #2157 SV until I decide how I'm going to do the bottom fairings. In the meantime I built a vintage Astron Scamp. The fossilized decals disintegrated in water (even after coating them) so a set from Sandman is on the way. Sandman's set has enough extras to do (2) Scamps, and I just happen to have a Semroc BNC-50XP that I bought because I was determined to clone the Alien Explorer while my legs were messed up last winter (but the Darvocet prevented me from concentrating long enough to start it.) I'll do the fins from 3/32" basswood, and I may make it streamer recovery to help prevent losing it. With basswood fins, I don't think it will need a parachute.
The Scamp was probably the first rocket for a lot of kids! Not me, though. My first was a Sky Hook. TBC

After cutting out the basswood blanks for the fins, I hand scrape the curved part of the outer edge using the mahogany sanding block until it matches the sample from the vintage kit. TBC

While holding the basswood fin against a small aluminum angle stock for squaring, I prep the root edge of each fin for mounting to the BT. TBC

Engine mount:
For the Scamp's quarter-mile + flights, I've WAY overbuilt the engine mount. I make my own split-ring, and assembled the mount as per the vintage instructions--but with epoxy and with a Kevlar leader for the shock cord. I'm also using a non-snelled(?) engine hook to keep the outside appearance "old school". TBC

.......and Voila!
After driving through a whiteout to get home from Holland, MI today, I finished the Scamp clone.
AWESOME decals (all two of them) from Sandman! Seven coats of Aerogloss on the NC.

Sounds like a plan! I don't think I've ever used the technique on a root edge longer than 2 or so inches.
