Default Rustoleum is driving me mad

At first I thought it was just a couple of bad cans from a batch, but since then I have had two or three other cans do the same thing.

While Spraying with various Rustoleum products, if I hold the can upright, it either sprays weak or without any pigment. If I hold the can upside down, like you typically do to clear the nozzle, it comes out in a full stream. Typically this has happened when I have used about a third of the can.

Anyone else have this problem or know a solution?

Old or new style nozzles? The itty bitty nozzles would do that on me from time to time, usually when there's some humidity. I wrote their customer service about it, got a bag of about 50 replacements free, so I just sub out a fresh one.

The newer larger nozzles are supposedly clog-free, I'e generally had pretty good experience with them.

I had the same thing happen about a month or so ago—exactly as you described it. I tried switching nozzles (twice), but the problem remained. It's the only time I've experienced that and I too, though it was pretty darned odd.

I tossed that can and then bought the 2X variety. The new can spit and spattered chunks in the middle of one paint job, but I haven't had a problem with it since.

I shake the ever-lov'in crap out of every can now and make sure it's at room temp. I don't know if it's helping, but I haven't had any strange phenomena recently. Fingers crossed.

They're the new nozzles, white with wide finger rest. I've also tried switching nozzles from a new can, same results. So I'm thinking it's not the nozzles.

I had too many issues with Rustoleum 2X on my recent Quest Magnum build, so back to old Formula Krylon.

I read somewhere else that with the 2X product, you need to allow more drying time between coats. If I had access to old formula Krylon, I would be right there beside you. As it is right now, I'm thinking of going to air brushing and paying the big up front cost.

That proved to be a disappoint for me. I bought an airbrush, and used the biggest nozzle it had, but the output was still dreadfully low. (Keep in mind, airbrushes are for detail work, and aren't really intended for laying down lots of paint.)

Frustrated with that, I plunked down still more cash for a detail gun. But it too doesn't put out enough paint, so the painting sessions with it were much like using the airbrush, painstakingly slow.

I think what's really needed is a regular paint gun equipped with a small reservoir.

Doug...2 cents...

Coincidentally, I used Rustoleum for the first time in years today. Gloss black, on a nose cone and the booster stage of a Texas Firefly.

It went on very nicely, but I was astonished to see that it was still wet many hours after spraying it on. Krylon really does dry fast!

Other than that, I don't have complaints at the moment.

I still have a good stash of old Krylon, just gave a bunch of the older stuff away. The few colors I needed I get from these two stores but you have to buy 6 at a time.
