A flying buddy is talking about doing cast resin fins with milled glass fiber in the mix for the Mercury Redstone. Would be cool if they did the HoJo fins as well.....

OK Jeffy, I finally worked up the testicular fortitude to attempt these fins. (Note expertly constructed and installed engine mount below.)
Had to order the dowels as that size is a tough find. They should be here in a day or two.

Updates as progress merits.

Thanks, Jedi Master!

Saturday morning. My dowels arrived yesterday, and have been cut, haphazardly glued to the fin cores and allowed to dry overnight. Today we'll be sanding bevels into the leading and trailing fin edges and applying the skins to one side of each fin.

Now for some technique:

I scroll down to the bottom of this page, click back to the beginning of the thread and begin re-reading Jeffy's tutorial.

Looking good! Your work area is FAR neater than mine.

Thanks. It better be. It's Sandy's kitchen table.

Ends are filled. When the Squadron Green dries and is sanded, I'll smooth the leading and trailing edges and strengthen with thin CA.

Non-fin question: What adhesive did you use to attach the holy band?

I used Titebond Red label.

Thanks! I asked because I wasn't sure if glue would cause the paper to bubble or wrinkle, and whether it might be better to use a spray. Titebond worked fine.

See below for fins attached. While far from perfect, they are lightyears better than I could have achieved before viewing this thread.

In the background you see my replacement Patriot, from the new kit.

Very nice! Now then, isn’t that easier than scraping? (It is for me, anyway.)
