Astron Ranger Clone
I am wondering what the colors on the original Ranger were from 1963. It appears to have a two tone color scheme if the scan I am seeing of the catalog is readable. The payload section is one color and the body/cone are another, or am I reading this wrong?
I am taking my Big Bertha kit and making a Ranger clone from it. I wanted to create the first pictured one if I could guestimate the color scheme. Any ideas? I really like the look of the one Phred did and his decals, probably do that if I can't get a fairly accurate color for the '63 version. I tried searching some pictures and posts but I don't think I am finding one with the original scheme... ??? |

My guess was red for the body, white for payload, but I've seen others do this scheme using blue. Either looks good.
Pictures of my Astron Ranger clones are attached. One is a BT-80 upscale, the other a normal-sized clone. |

Waaaaay back when, when dinosaurs... no, wrong era, but close. IIRC the Ranger I did was red and a sliver payload. This is what I recall of the paint scheme given. That rocket flew so well on those B8's, and the old B3's would lift a payload. |

Dontcha mean B.8's ?
I know those were the forerunners/equivalents of the metric/newton rated B6. The old B3's became the B14's

The B.8-x was closer in performance to the B4.
The long-discontinued metric A5 was a close match to the A.8-x. As I understand it, the current "A8" has gotten mushier through the years and is more like a A4 in real-world standards. So, if you want a old-timey flight experience out of your Ranger, put in 3 x B4-4. |

I'd rather put in 3xB14-5 from my stash of old oop engines.
Now THAT is a real flight....equivalent to a 15n-sec 3/4D42-5 ! That was actually a great combo for flying the old K-37 Astron Scrambler. If your egg survived that flight you knew it was padded well.

Had I completely read the destructions I downloaded I would have seen stated in step #16 to use red, cerise, or fluorescent orange...
However, I see the face card appears to be at least two different colors... Hmmmm. maybe a combo of two of the three recommendations. Cerise is kinda pretty |

That yellow-and-blue single engine mess that Estes produced in the late 80's/early 90's and called Ranger is borderline blasphemy toward the original Astron Ranger.
