What's the best primer for use on foam??
I'm finishing a Mirv, and I am wondering what people have used to prime the foam. Preferably something rattle can. I usually use auto primer on everything else, I know that is a no-no for the foam. Something with good build properties would be ideal, since that should help with irregularities in the foam. Thanks.

I am guessing that you are getting rid of the ejector marks on the foam parts? Find a water based clear coat. It used to be thinned white or PVA glue in the early days of foamies, but the best primer is the foam skin for an acryl paint.

John isn't wrong, but personally I use Testors rattle-can primer white primer and gray primer. It's foam safe. I painted the nose cone of this Quest MLAS with it.

That sounds like what I'm after - thanks. And that's a nice looking rocket. Almost as many fins as mine!

Kilz brand white primer in the rattle-can is foam-safe and fills very well. Dries slowly though. Spray on evening then sand the next.

GH, after shooting the Kilz primer can a non foam-safe topcoat be used?

I knew I'd done one of those--I just had to find the photos.
As I remember, there weren't enough re/white target decals to finish the rocket as shown on the packaging, so I made more of them with red and white adhesive film and an OLFA cutter. I also remember that the foam would dent if you just looked at it wrong. Here's the MIRV I built back in 2012.
