Default Nuclear spaceships

Hello All,

I found online PDF scans of books about space nuclear power, which were written or co-authored by William R. Corliss (I have included the links to them below). These semi-technical (and illustrated) publications cover space nuclear reactors, power conversion systems, power and propulsion applications, space mission capabilities, and the reactors’ safety features. Reading these books, I was surprised to learn that the U.S. developed and tested other non-rocket space reactors besides the SNAP-10A that was launched into Earth orbit in April 1965 (see: http://www.drewexmachina.com/2015/0...actor-in-orbit/ ), and:

The AEC/NASA space reactor program was well on its way to producing high-power (megawatt output) reactors for electrical propulsion spaceships to explore the solar system—and all of this was achieved by 1971. Imagine what could be done in this field with *today’s* technology? Collaborating with Russia on such projects and missions could make them politically—as well as economically—feasible. Below are the links to the books’ PDF scans:

“SNAP Nuclear Space Reactors” by William R. Corliss

“Nuclear Propulsion for Space” by William R. Corliss and Francis C. Schwenk

I hope this material will be useful.

The anti nuke envirowhacko groups always go completely nuts when another one is launched. The protest about the New Horizons was the smallest one in decades though. The Christic Institute is usually the lead on these protests and always tries filing a lawsuit to stop the launches in court. Jeremy Rifkin used to be in among them, but he has gone on to being a lead against GMO's now.

They should be happy. We are sending the radioactive material away from earth where it can never be used here for any reason. The small chance of blowing the stuff all over the east coast of Florida should be well worth it to them.

Those that do not like Nuclear-Powered spacecraft should be given the answer I always give to those that don't like something I'm doing.

"TOUGH ! Too GD BAD ! Quit your sniveling, whining and bellyaching. Suck it up and DEEL WITH IT AS IT IS !"

Sometimes I throw in an always justified "STFU and GTFOH !"

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I've always thought that the anti-nuke folks ought to pose for protest pix at the launch pad...under the first stage nozzles... But to my pleasant surprise, last night I found that NASA is developing a new, multi-purpose series of space reactors:

The new design, called KiloPower (see: http://www.space.com/37348-nasa-fis...ars-colony.html and www.google.com/#q=NASA+Kilopower+reactor ), is for providing the electricity needed by an expedition on Mars, although other applications (such as providing power in perpetually-dark lunar craters) are also being studied. Such a reactor could also power ion drive or Hall Effect thrusters on deep space craft, such as for outer solar system missions, and:

This brief video www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fYdLsSTf-M about the KiloPower reactor contains a sort of “homage” to Ernst Stuhlinger’s 1950s circular ion drive Mars spaceships (see: www.youtube.com/watch?v=esYyOnz76NU ). Also, this “Aerospace America” article (see: http://aerospaceamerica.aiaa.org/fe...ission-fission/ ) gives a good program background on the KiloPower system. (This time, they’re going to start with a small flight reactor for use in smaller unmanned ion drive outer solar system probes, then develop bigger units later. Previous space reactor projects’ large scale and costs made them economically unattractive, because they required equally-big missions to be worthwhile to develop.) The first reactor test is scheduled for this fall.
