Default OOP Quest X-15 Build

Well, kind of OOP, the parts are all available still at Quest, just have to email them. I was lucky and received the actual kit, but still order parts to build another in the future if needed. This looks to be a great kit with quality parts.

Scigs,

Great kit! Very nice looking sport model.

A word of caution, though. I really tried to put a nice finish on mine, lots of filler and fillets with epoxy clay. Ended up being a bit too heavy, went unstable until I added a bit of noseweight. Still love the model, though. Quest has always done a really nice job with sport scale models.

I've got one that I just finished glueing together. Waiting on warmer weather to start painting...

I noticed the warning included in the kit: "Use A8-3 or A6-4 engines only."

Looks like noseweight would be needed anyway, especially if you wanted to go with something other than an 'A' engine.
Steve, I would have done the same...

For finishing I plan on my usual of 4 coats of Aerogloss balsa sealer, light coat of primer, touch up with HobbyLite Filler, sand and another lite coat of primer followed by Old Formula Krylon Black. I would not dare use Rustoleum 2X on this since I just witnessed how much weight it added to my Magnum build.

This rocket is a fast easy build and a great design, cannot say enough for this sport rocket. The build was straightforward, the laser cutting was spot on. The plans did call for beveling of the root edges for 2 of the fins, I just guessed and sanded accordingly. Now I will allow the fillets to dry and tomorrow brush on 4 coats of balsa sealer.

I see you went with the longer 14" BT. I went with the original 11" BT and just added more nose weight. It flies fine on B-C motors.

This was the body tube that came in the kit, Quest must have changed it.

The original directions on the Quest site give the BT length as 11". They reworked the kit and stretch the tube to 14" for better stability. I don't think it looks as good as the original. My opinion.

Question Opinions needed

The kit price was not bad, would have to look at my PayPal and see what I paid. Quest still sells the laser cut parts, decals, nose and other parts at a fair price. I also noticed my Bt is longer, I think it is 14 inches. I have her all painted and waiting for decals, do you think I should cut the BT to 11? It would be easy to do as long as I cut it before adding the decals. The weight so far is pretty good, 4 coats of balsa sealer, one coat of primer, and couple coats of old Krylon Glossy Black. Once I hear some opinions, I will cut the tube and add decals or leave it as is and add decals. Yes I plan on flying her.
