Default Delta II counting again...

Hello All,

After yesterday's scrub, the penultimate (next-to-the-last) Delta II rocket is scheduled for launch early this morning (1:47 AM PST [4:47 AM EST; 0947 GMT]) Wednesday, November 15, from Vandenberg Air Force Base. If all goes well, it will inject JPSS 1, the first in a new line of polar-orbiting meteorological satellites for NOAA, into orbit. Live coverage of the countdown and launch can be seen online *here* (see: http://spaceflightnow.com/2017/11/1...-status-center/ and www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/#media ), and:

The final launch of the Delta II, which will end the nearly 60-year career of the 8’ diameter, Thor IRBM (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile)-based satellite launch vehicle (see: http://kevinforsyth.net/delta/backgrnd.htm [the photos are click-able, expandable “thumbnail” images]), will be in 2018, when it boosts the ICESat-2 satellite (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICESat-2 ) into a near-polar, Sun-synchronous orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base. (The much larger Delta IV [see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_IV ], which shares almost nothing with the Delta II other than its name, will continue flying for a few more years.) One remaining Delta II vehicle, for which no payload has been assigned, will go to a museum.

This Delta II won’t fly tonight, either—the upper-level winds are too high, and are forecasted to remain so for at least a couple of days (they’re preparing for a 24-hour turnaround just in case, though).
