Default Vintage Centuri MX-774

I started the Centuri MX-774 today and finished the build today. She is built out of the bag using normal white glue, nothing fancy. I did replace the rubber shock cord but used the old mount and tape disks for the shroud lines. I did have to use glue for the mount and disks. Who says 40 year old Centuri glue is too old? As per the plans, I used Astro-Fill for the fins for a nice smooth finish, 4 coats sanding after 20 min. You can see how well the grain was filled with the fill. All and all a fun build and will begin painting tomorrow if weather permits.

I built and flew on of those once. And it was just once. I think a B6-6 sent it into orbit.

Apogee Rockets is coming out with a new MX-774B HiROC kit soon. Flies on mid-power - should be interesting!

A MX-774 on a B6-6 should be easily recoverable unless flying in a ridiculously small site.
I used to fly an Astron Sprint (about same size) on C6-7s to over 1600' regularly and got it back every time.

It is a piece of cake now... but it can be tough for kids with only scant experience in the hobby.

Ok, I am calling her done painted like the picture in the Centuri Catalog. The directions had the builder paint the entire rocket black maybe to cover up the red nose? Well, I did paint her all black and the red nose looked fine. Then when I painted the white, the red began to bleed through, oh well it is a vintage build. Those are pictures of my new back yard, I can finally launch my rockets.

Those later red nose cones (compared to the early orange-red, as I call it) do have a tendency to bleed through. I recall about 10 years ago building a vintage Long Tom with the same PNC-89 as the MX-774 uses and it was one of the later red cones. It was to be painted white also and the primer was white. That red bled through the primer and two coats of primer. I sanded and re-primed. Same thing.

I finally did a couple coats of primer and let it set for a few weeks or so to hopefully cure really well, sanded lightly and then did a somewhat light finish coat in the hopes the last coat of paint would not soften up the primer underneath in any way. That seemed to do it, but it took a lot more effort to get that result than it should have. I don't recall the red nose cones acting that way back in the day, so maybe it has something to do with the age of the plastic also. Not sure.

Looks good scigs! Fly away!!

I agree with you, I think it has to do with age, I have heard the same thing with the old Aurora model kits that were molded in red. I am not going to put too much fuss in this issue since I just love building old kits.

Well it's a lovely result just the same, and it looks great sitting on that pad!
