This is interesting. It is not the Der Big Red Max kit offered in the Estes catalog form 1978-1982. That set included the Big Foot launch system. The set offered in this eBay listing has a Porta-Pad and Solar Launch Controller. I believe this starter set was an exclusive unit sold in a department store chain (Montgomery Ward, Walker Scott, JC Penny, etc.) during the 1980s. It was not unknown for a department store chain to contact a manufacturer to produce an 'exclusive' product for only that chain. JC Penny did that at one point with the Estes Saturn V (It was a starter set with launch equipment and motors). How many other 'exclusive' products were produced by Estes in the past? I would be curious to know the copyright date on the packaging for this Der Big Red Max set.

I want to say this version came out before the for the catalog version just because of the 2 piece nose cone. Also, if you zoom in on the box you can see a picture of the 1977 catalog next to the build Red Max in the right lower corner. I have this kit and there is no date to be found anywhere on the box, but like I said it has a picture of the 1977 catalog. I had the same issue when I built my Long John Silver, no date to be found. On the Long John Silver box there is a 1978 catalog in the picture with the built rocket.

This is the only shrink-wrapped color box Centuri Saturn 1b I have ever seen. I tried for it but not as high of a bid as if I had super-duper wanted it. Still, I was right behind the winner. So yes, it went for a very high price for this particular kit, but one could say there were some special circumstances that caused that. It was up to just over $400 probably an hour before bidding ending. Glad Matt got a good return on it. Earl

The price that the Centuri Saturn 1B went for is ABSURD.
Not a rare kit. I wouldn't pay that for a NIB Enerjet Athena.

Here is another item that went for a pretty good chunk of change last night. Now, the Centuri Sky Cycle, either kit or outfit, has always gotten pretty good shakes when they are put up on ebay, but this was just the kit and it went for nearly $250. Used to be that's what the entire outfit would fetch.
The past few months or so has seen a bit of a resurgence in kit prices after a good handful of years now when vintage kit sales, while not exactly at the bargain level, had seemed to have cooled off a bit compared to 10-15 years ago. Not sure if it is just one or two new bidders on the scene trying to bone-up on their kit collections (newly retired folks maybe), but there has been some increased attention to vintage rocketry listings, no doubt. Yep, wayyyyy more than I would pay for a tiny rocket barely above a simple 3FNC.

Earl, I was thinking the same thing the other day when the Der Red Max Starter kit went for over 250.00 and it was missing the main body tube. I bough the same kit a couple of years ago on eBay complete for 130.00, steep but a rare kit. I think we have a new collector in our hobby. Heck, the Fonzi MPC motor bike sold for 40 bucks and its missing the box. |
