Vintage Estes Saturn K-39 Build
Well, I have searched and have not seen this rocket built on the forums, or I can just be a bad "searcher". Anyway sometime back someone on eBay was selling a few of these for 40 or 50 bucks each, I bought 2. Then I found an older Saturn kit in a box for 18.00 on Ioffer, it is compete. I am building this per the plans and should make for a fun build. I am not expecting miracles for a finish since the display card shows flaws in the paint job and I am sure mine will also. This would be easy to clone except for the plastic coupling may be hard to find.

That will be interesting. I've built the similar-sized Dr. Zooch model, but I don't think I've ever even seen one of those.

Awesome! I've always been curious about this one, but I've never seen one built. I think I was putting together a parts list to see if I could build one via Semroc, but I got distracted by something shiny.

A childhood friend bought and built one. I don't know if he ever flew it.

I bought and flew one as a kid...it was the only Saturn I could afford
Great flyer...the stick-on fins sorta peeled off after a few flights...don't think I ever had any pictures of it. |

I have one somewhere.
It's missing one of the clear fins. Dope for glue didn't work all that well. I'll see if I can find it and get a picture.

Bob, you should ask around on this forum for a piece of material to replace that fin. I was sure I had an old scrap piece and went looking for it, to no avail. I'll keep looking, but in the meantime, there might be someone else who has a piece. Joe |

Sorry, but this will be a few posts with pictures added.
Well I had all day to work on this rocket and start on a freeflight plane at the same time. I am once again following the directions and so far everything is going as planned. The engine mount is built like any other Estes model except the plastic coupling is sandwiched between the two 20/60 rings. The sheet the rings came in is kept to be used further in the build. The nose is pretty straightforward with the tip being cut off and a launch lug added to extend the nose. Once the engine mount is dried it is put inside the body tube so the last adapter is 1/8" inside the Body tube. I then added a fillet of glue to the rear and a fillet of glue to the forward ring with the help of my extended Q-tip. I cut out the marking guide and placed all the marks as per the plans and removed the guide. I used a sharp X-Acto knife to cut out the slots being careful not to cut through the plastic coupling underneath. The plans did not say exactly where to place the marking guide from the bottom, but 1/8th of an inch seemed about right. The shroud formers were traced onto the used ring adapter sheet and then cut out making sure they were all the correct size. I then glued the formers onto the body tube as shown on the plans. The shrouds were cut out and pre-formed using the sharp end of a pencil and folding the tabs over, I made sure the printed side was facing down. Then small slots had to be cut in the formers once the glue dried for the shrouds to tuck into. The shrouds were glued one side at a time and the fit was ok. The fin sheet was pretty scratched up but that is ok since this is a vintage kit. I pinned the pattern on the cutting board and carefully scored the sheet and broke the fins out. It was too hard to cut the fins completely out so scouring was the easiest. I brushed butyrate dope through the slots and added the fins. This is probably not the strongest joint but it can be reinforced with epoxy fillets since the slots were a little too wide. This should be it for tonight, tomorrow I will add the wraps. Not the prettiest build, but she is coming along. |

You can use a piece of PST-60 or PST-65 and cut a small section out of it. Then you need to tape it together before installing it on the motor mount. The earliest K-39s had an instruction insert to do this to the supplied plastic tubing because the JT-60P was not available yet. The other hard-to-find part is the 0.040" sheet of butyrate acetate (CFS-40). Other than the clear plastic parts and the paper details, the rest of the parts are available from Semroc.
