Mercury Redstone 1:52
I've maybe gone 3D printer crazy and I've got 3 projects going at once! While browsing Thingiverse I came across files for a "Mercury Capsule for Polecat 5.5" Redstone".
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3285664 I happend to have a length of Semroc Centuri ST-13 (Estes BT-56) sitting in front of me and thought, why not! I started this project when I got my first 3D printer, I printed the capsule, but I just couldn't get the tower to print. After a dozen or so tries I gave up and shelved it. Today I was sitting at my desk getting ready to work on the Pershing when I looked at the capsule sitting there and thought I'd try the tower again with my new printer. Same results, disaster. But I kept trying, then I hit the right settings combination in the slicing program, and success! So I went ahead and printed the rest of the parts. This is scaled down to 24.25% of the Polecat version. I'm using PETG again, so I think the tower may be strong enough for flight, worst case, I get to print another one!

I started to assemble the capsule and realized the black capsule parts printed with the older printer just were not as good as the red parts, so I printed the black capsule parts again with the new printer.

I think this really turned out pretty good. Now to cut out some fins, install an engine mount, launch lug, and add some paint and decals.

I have absolutely no idea where I came up with this being 1:75 scale, it's more like 1:52.

I decided to try my hand at making a 3D part and created a fin can for it. I didn't do a lot of detail, did about what I would have done in balsa. And it certainly isn't scale, but it turned out pretty good I think. The fin can weighs 15 grams and the capsule weighs 13 grams.

US Army Redstone Missile
While I was searching for the Mercury Redstone scale date, I was reminded of the US Army Redstone Missile. I used the scale data I came across and created a 3D model of a nose cone in the same 1:52 scale for an ST-16/BT-56 tube size. I printed a test cone overnight, it turned out pretty good, although I have some layering issues in my model I need to address, there are some print imperfections on the back side, so not there yet. Not counting the shoulder, the cone is about 6.4 inches tall and weighs 15 grams.

That looks excellent! That cone is similar in shape to the Pershing cone. Another project?
