I believe if you rotate the ring which is a circle it will turn into an Ellipse, so you will end up with shape that is completely different from what he has done. The part needs to be cut from a longer tube.

Correct. Attached image shows the form for the pieces; to cut them from a tube you'd have need a piece of tubing exactly this size (i.e., gigantic). |

Or downscale to 13mm motors.
(Frack, now I have another build to put on the mini list.) If you had a 5 (?) axis CNC with a laser head, you could stick the tube on the 'lathe' axis (assuming you had positional control, not just rotation) and at least mark the tube, if not cut it outright. That would be a heckofa math project.

Just creating the template to mark the form was a bit of a project. The hard part was coordinating everything so the helical parts would mate up properly to the front and back support fins. Had I a 5" piece of tubing to cut from, I would have used the same template and just cut it out. Although programming a CNC or a laser cutter to do it would be cool. |

Neil, they all look great!
But I have to ask, what's with posting all this rocket stuff to a political forum? Seriously, keep it up. Nice to see a few scratch builds! Randy http://www.vernarockets.com http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHJHOK6 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O14ET8K http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CX1UPCG |

I do have a launch picture of the APRO Lander, attached.
This thing is not, shall we say, the most aerodynamic thing in the world, and the D12 really strained to push it through the air. In the future I will try flying it with a composite E15. It sustained a broken fin on landing (even papered fins aren't immune I guess), which has been repaired but I still need to do some paint clean-up. I'll be putting in a larger chute for next time, hope to soften the landing a bit. |
